Kids have enough to deal with at school without having to be embarrassed about their lunch bill.
California Kids No Longer Get Inferior Lunches
California has really stepped up to the plate when it comes to kids overdue equally.
A new bill makes sure that no child ends up with an alternative lunch just because their lunch bill isn’t paid.
Ryan Kyote Made The Difference
This young student saved up his allowance so he could help to pay off the lunch debt that was outstanding in his class. Ryan is only ten years old. He was only able to cover a portion of the bill, which was $7oo. But he donated $74.80 towards it.
The Government Listened
Governor Newsom made a point to thank Ryan for his actions after the Governor signed the bill into law.
Governor Newsom Kept His Promise
The governor had met with Ryan and told him that if the bill got to his desk that it would be signed.
The School Lunch Challenges
Many schools throughout the States face different challenges when it comes to the lunch programs. There are varying policies, and this makes it confusing. For example, some school policies say:
That an alternative lunch consists of a cold lunch like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
Going Beyond This
One school sent out letters telling parents to pay lunch bills or they threatened to have their kids put in foster care.
Humiliation
Students are often centered out because their lunch count is in arrears, and this is just one example.
This young student was denied a lunch tray, which was noticeable to the other kids. One can only imagine how humiliating this would have been for this young lady. The school’s response was that it was unfortunate and a miscommunication. The parents had not received any notice about the over due lunch account.
Throw Out The Lunch
Another abhorring policy for some schools is that they demand that the kids throw out their school lunches if there is an outstanding bill.
At Madison County High, when a student was ordered to do just this, but the student refused. Other students protested this. The Principal says the kids are warned when their unpaid bill hits $15.
Not A Lunch But A Snack
One young student was on the free lunch program, but instead of receiving a full lunch was given cheese and crackers. The original meal was supposed to be lasagna which they took away from the student. However, the child behind him who also did not have lunch money was told to go ahead and eat the lasagna because they were out of cheese and crackers!
Not Just A Few Isolated Cases
The examples shown are not just a few isolated cases. These and similar types of actions are ongoing. There are plenty that has been reported, but just imagine how many have not hit the news. This is something that the school districts supporting this type of behavior should be ashamed of.
California Kids No Longer Have To Worry About Being Shamed.
At least in California, this is no longer going to be a state accused of shaming their kids over lunch money.
