Kid sobs on the first day of school, so bus driver holds his hand
This was the perfect thing to do.

You may be beyond being a student but we bet you still remember what your first day of school felt like.

While a lot of kids may have been excited for theirs, we bet there also many who found the experience scary. And that’s nothing to be ashamed of.

This four-year-old student, Axel, certainly belongs to the latter group. Lucky for him though, he met a very understanding and helpful bus driver who made his first day of school less frightening.

First-day jitters

According to a report from CNN, Axel was headed to start his first year of preschool in an elementary school setting. He was actually excited at the prospect of it. However, it seems like he got cold feet at the last minute and burst into tears before he got on the bus that would take him to school.

According to his mom, Amy, the preschooler got really quiet when he saw the bus coming around the corner. By the time the vehicle opened its doors, Axel was already crying. And even after Amy took the boy to his seat, he still wouldn’t let go.

Fortunately, the bus driver decided to help the mother and son out.

Not your typical school bus driver

Bus drivers are often portrayed as either kind old men or grumpy old men in movies and television shows. Isabel couldn’t be more different than that media portrayal, except that she clearly qualifies for the kind part, too.

Seeing the struggling child, Isabel decided to reach out one of her hands to Axel, who was sitting just behind her. Perhaps thinking of the sweet gesture as a lifeline, the boy grabbed her hand. The moment was then captured by Amy, who was still hoping to get a good picture of her little one on his first-ever day of school

Going viral

In the end, she got more than she asked for. The picture immediately gained traction after it was reposted by the Augusta Police Department on their Facebook page. And soon enough, it went on to appear on national news.

Isabel, who has only been on the job for less than a year, also shared the photo on her own Facebook page

and captioned the post expressing how much she loves her job:

“So blessed I get to wake up every morning and make a difference! LOVE my job!!❤️“

Apparently, the young bus driver has a knack for working with kids and actually learns a lot about them while ferrying them to school every day.

In the end, Isabel just did the best she could do given the situation seeing how Axel needed comforting.

All’s well that ends well

Isabel’s efforts certainly worked. The boy eventually stopped crying before the school bus reached the end of the road. What’s more, Axel gets on the bus every day without crying anymore. In fact, he’s actually learned to love school.

Hopefully, his little brother, who is only two years old at the moment, will follow in a few years in his big brother’s footsteps. He’ll probably have an easier time, though, especially with Axel guiding him when the time comes.

And if the brothers are lucky, Isabel will still be there to comfort nervous students on their first day of school.
