What are your thoughts on spanking?

Raising children is an experience that will test the very moral fiber of your being, as no matter what you do, you will always feel as if you are doing it wrong. In fact, if you’re lucky enough (which, chances are you will be), you won’t just feel this way; rather, you’ll actually have people tell you, to your face and in writing, that you ARE going about the whole child rearing gig wrong, and that maybe you should reconsider. But alas, reconsider you cannot, and what is done is done, and so you must continue to listen to all the other parents and nonparents out there tell you about how they could do a better job raising your child…

It’s fun. Really.

Now, I’m just your average person whom nobody knows anything about. Therefore, I’m spared a majority of the world’s opinions. Kelly Clarkson, on the other hand, is a celebrity, one with a fairly large fan base, one that spans the course of 15+ years, all the way back to her debut on American Idol. Despite that, however, and despite the very real possibility for a public outcry of anger, Clarkson had the audacity to share her opinions on spanking.

Yes, spanking, the number one most contested parenting topic amongst parents and non-parents alike.

*Gasp*

Before you too, however, feel a need to chime in, let’s just hear what she has to say.

“I’m not above spanking, which people aren’t necessarily into,” she admitted to Rochester, NY’s 98.9 the Buzz. “I don’t mean, like, hitting her hard, I just mean a spanking.” She explained that she warns her daughter before it’s going to happen to give her a chance to behave.”

To defend her actions, she went on to explain that she too was spanked as a child, and she doesn’t believe she was adversely affected. “My parents spanked me, and I did fine in life,” she said. “I’m from the South, y’all. So, like, we get spankings.”

The only time she feels slightly uncomfortable with spanking her 3-year old is when she’s out in public. “People are like, you know, they think that’s wrong or something, but I find nothing wrong with spanking.”

Well, there you have it. As always, Clarkson is straightforward and to the point with her beliefs.

Just last July, a Twitter troll responded to Clarkson’s 4th of July post with, “You’re fat.” Clarkson shot back with a simple yet poignant, “Still awesome.”

In a 2014 interview with Redbook, Clarkson had this to say about her weight: “I don’t obsess about my weight, which is probably one of the reasons so many people have a problem with it.”

In an interview with Ellen, she talks candidly about her experience on American Idol as “the biggest contestant.” “Yeah, I was the biggest girl on [‘American Idol’] too,” Clarkson said. “And I wasn’t big, but people would call me big because I was the biggest one on ‘Idol,’ and I’ve kind of always gotten that.”

All of this goes to show one thing: Kelly Clarkson DGAF. She will continue to do what she wants, your opinions be damned. So, mom shamers out there, keep your opinions regarding spanking to yourself, thank you very much.
