First love is an incredible moment, and it’s a special time when someone is going through the momentous experience but one man in Ireland felt so overwhelmed by the feeling that he explained he could not be a nonbiased juror when he was called into being a potential juror at The Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin, Ireland. The man explained to the judge that he had planned a long weekend away with his love, and that he did not want to cancel his plans because it was his “first time in love.”
Journalist Sarah Jane Murphy was in the court that day when she heard the exchange, which she quickly shared to her Twitter followers. The exact exchange went apparently as followed between the judge and the unnamed man:
“Man: I can’t serve; I’m away for weekend.
Judge: We don’t sit at weekends.
Man: I’m away till Monday. I’m 54, a bachelor & it’s my 1st time in love.”
The judge apparently thought that this was a valid enough reason to be excused from the court and the internet quickly began to praise him for his kind heart.
One person replied saying, ‘Ah yes, love may come late, but when it does even jury duty can’t stop it ! #IBelieveInLove,’ while another replied that “Romance is alive and well. Yay!” Some others also said that the judge was a “Good Man” and one man was even inspired- “Awesome story and decision – I may be inspired to write a poem.”
Finally, one Twitter user compared it to the type of love seen in romantic comedies like Love Actually– “Is this the ending to Love Actually II?” – and another continued off on the comments by saying “This honestly sounds like the ending to a film and it’s lovely!”
While we’re definitely not sure this is the kind of excuse that can work with any regular judge, everyone seems to love the idea that this man was able to get time off to celebrate being in love for the first time. The court system can feel sterile and slow at times without space for emotions and feelings, but the truth is that we all have a heart and the judge proved that there is still space for leniency!
As for the unknown Irish man who didn’t have jury duty, we hope he had an extra special day away with his first love!
