The ability to tell a story through song is a gift we all wish we possessed. Singing, after all, is more than just belting out each lyric and having the right accompaniment to complement one’s voice. Contestants of The Voice, a popular television series centered on finding winning talents, do more than just appear onstage and give their best rendition of well-loved tracks. Armed with stories of their own, competitors’ willingness to fight for the winning spot often stems from life-changing experiences they survived through music and singing. It is precisely this determination and honesty that inspires others to pursue their dreams and unapologetically show the world what they’re made of. Talent, after all, isn’t a question of age, race, or gender. It’s what you choose to do with it that determines how far you’ll go.
Take Jordan Anthony Rabbone for instance. His appearance on The Voice Australia introduced his larger than life talent to the world, but it was his courage that got him as far as the Blind Auditions. The fourteen-year-old resident of Perth, Australia blew everyone away with his cover of Pink’s song, “What About Us.”
It was a song choice that already defied expectations. After all, Pink’s strong, husky voice isn’t one that many can imitate – one of the many traits that earned her the reputation of being one of this generation’s best singers. You’d expect a country ballad, an indie song, or a cool R&B track but Jordan Anthony decided to go in a different direction. The youngster’s decision to take Pink’s song and add his own uniqueness and talent to it was a brave one, something that left the audience and the judges in eager anticipation.
With the judges’ backs turned to the stage, Jordan went on that stage not knowing what was to come of his performance. His calm demeanor, barely showing any signs of nervousness, was the perfect introduction to his performance. If you watch closely, you’ll notice that it’s actually his family, stationed on the side of the stage, showing a different range of reactions: tension, excitement, hope, optimism, name it! Jordan Anthony began singing the first few lines almost effortlessly, almost immediately eliciting applause and cheers from the audience.
Barely reaching the chorus, his voice elicited various reactions, with Kelly Rowland and Guy Sebastian enthusing over the quality of his voice, Delta Goodrem going from thoughtfully nodding and listening to having a smile spread across her face, and the three beckoning Boy George to join them on the seat as they prepared to face the young talent.
A voice as strong as Jordan Anthony’s, something so incredible that it could actually compel known music icons like Boy George, Guy Sebastian, Delta Goodrem, and Kelly Rowland to stand up from their seats and express their admiration and approval, speaks volumes of his talent and what he has to offer. His is a voice to watch out for – just the spark of incredible this world needs.
