All parents who torture their children with their singing can relate to this Jerry O’Connell video
If you love your kids, then you should sing to them like Jerry O'Connell does. They will thank you for it!

You may remember iconic actor Jerry O’Connell from his roles in the 1980’s classic movie “Stand by Me” (1986), as Quinn Mallory in the science fiction/fantasy TV show “Sliders” (1995–2000), as Derek in ‘Scream 2” (1997), or as Detective Woody Hoyt in the TV series “Crossing Jordan” (2002–2007).

But one video featuring O’Connell just went viral, and it’s hysterical. O’Connell recently posted a video on Twitter of himself happily singing while driving with his two kids in the car. Of course, his kids act as though they’re being tortured by their dad’s “embarrassing performance.”

If you’re a parent with kids, you may have experienced the moment when you can’t help but break out into song … to the horror of your mortified children. Let’s be honest, when certain songs, such as “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey; “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morissette; “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston; or any one of Prince’s many songs come on the radio, how can you NOT sing along, right?

Teach your children ‘real music’

In the video O’Connell posted on Twitter, which had the caption “Teach Your Children,” the song that O’Connell chose to sing to his two daughters was Prince’s “When Doves Cry.” O’Connell belts out the song with gusto, telling his children, “This is real music. This is real music, listen! Listen to it!” And as his kids wail in agony, he follows up with “Guys, stop it!” … as he sang the following lyrics:

“How can you just leave me standing?

Alone in a world that’s so cold (so cold)

Maybe I’m just too demanding

Maybe I’m just like my father, too bold

Maybe you’re just like my mother

She’s never satisfied (she’s never satisfied) …”

Unless you were born yesterday, you’ve probably heard of one of Prince’s most famous songs, “When Doves Cry.” It was on his 1984 Purple Rain soundtrack, which also included the hits “Let’s Go Crazy,’ “Purple Rain,” and “I Would Die 4 U.”

Prince’s songs are beyond amazing, so I’d like to personally thank O’Connell, who is married to model and actress Rebecca Romijn, for teaching his twin girls, Dolly and Charlie, about “real music.”

During the viral video, one of O’Connell’s daughters pleaded: “Turn it down! We’re next to the high school!” And the other daughter grabs her head and hides her face. Of course, O’Connell just kept singing along to the music while encouraging his adorable girls to pay attention.

The Twitter feedback to the video was just as funny, with people sharing their own stories of upsetting their kids with their singing and others with kudos for the funny video. Here’s some of the feedback:

  • “I play Coldplay, Psychedelic Furs, and U2 as I drive my 14-yr-old son to his football games. The boy is angry and ready to play when he arrives.”
  • “You’re freaking hilarious bro. I did the same with my daughter; she is so embarrassed.”
  • “This is AWESOME! We must pass on good taste in music to the next generation. Nice job … Now do The Clash.”
  • “One day they will understand that they have the coolest dad ever and thank you.”
  • “ALWAYS respect the music and sing it as loud as you can. Your kids will thank you for it later.”
  • “Well played. If you don’t teach your kids about 80s music in the home, they’ll just learn about it on the streets.”
  • “You are my parenting HERO! Play Huey Lewis next! Or maybe some Cyndi Lauper!”
