On January 1st of 2023, Jeremy Renner almost died.

While helping his nephew, Alexander Fries, tow his car that had gotten stuck in the snow, one of the worst things imaginable happened.

Alexander didn’t realize he was in the way of a snowplow, and Jeremy made a split-second decision that almost cost him his life.

While pulling his nephew out of the way of the 7-ton SnowCat, Jeremy was crushed underneath it.

In an interview with Diane Sawyer from ABC News, Jeremy says that he was awake through the whole ordeal, and he vividly remembers the pain.

He broke over 30 bones in his body, including his ankles, eye socket, and jaw, plus 8 of his ribs in 14 different places.

When asked, though, Jeremy said he would do it again.

“It was going right at my nephew,” Jeremy says when Diane shows her disbelief at his statement.

The love the family shares for each other is clear; Jeremy posts a note his young nephew Auggie wrote for him on his Instagram page.

“I’m very lucky because my uncle is Hawkeye (which is one of the Avengers),” the note reads, “I am also very lucky that my uncle is alive from his accident.”

“Love my little man,” posts Jeremy on the sweet little note, “Bless you, Auggie”.

It is clear that the whole family is quite close and shares a lot of love for each other.

One of the clips Jeremy posted only a few days after his accident, was of his sister helping to wash his hair for the first time in over a week.

He is laying in the hospital full of tubes and wires, but he still manages to laugh with his sister as she fills a shower cap with shampoo and water and rubs it around on his head.

His family spent much of their time in the hospital with the actor while he was recovering.

Diane Sawyer also interviewed the nephew Jeremy saved, and the young man was quite emotional about it.

“I just ran up to him,” Alexander says, choking back tears, “I didn’t think he was alive.”

Luckily for Jeremy, his will to live is incredibly strong, “I chose to survive,” he says, “this is not going to kill me.”

He has kept up this same attitude through multiple surgeries, rehabs, and unimaginable pain.

“I lost a lot of flesh and bone in this experience,” he says, “but I’ve been refueled and refilled by love and titanium.”

And the love didn’t come just from his family either; he received thousands of messages from fans and tons from his co-stars and others in the industry.

“I talked to him yesterday,” says his Avengers co-star Paul Rudd, “He’s doing alright; he’s doing well. “He’s the best guy; he’s awesome.”

Jeremy has hundreds of thousands of people rooting for him, and he appreciates them all.

When asked what he sees when he looks in the mirror, Jeremy simply said, “I see a lucky man.”
