Folks who grew up in some of the world’s colder climates probably know all about the fun that can be had after a good snowfall.

And those in warmer climates will surely know the joys of playing on a sandy beach.

One 63-year-old man, former cartographer Simon Beck, still enjoys playing in the sand and snow.

Simon, a man from London, England, spends his days making incredibly intricate snow and sand art.

What started out as a fun way to get more exercise has slowly turned into a full-time job for him.

By walking in concentric circles around a main anchor point, Simon creates beautiful and symmetrical works of art.

Far from the snow angels that many people surely remember making as children, Simon’s artwork is meticulously planned and choreographed before he even starts.

By using a compass and a one-millimetre grid, Simon draws his ideas on paper before setting off to create them on his own.

His tools consist of a compass, snow shoes, skis, ski poles, and determination.

Some of the pieces that Simon has created have taken 12 hours to complete, and it must all be done in a single day so no weather overnight can ruin the work.

Whether it be more falling snow or rain, wind, rising tides, or just the other people in the environment, these works of art can be easily ruined.

Though there are rarely any errors in the work, it does happen now and again.

If an error does occur, Simon either works it into the final design, tries to cover it up with more snow or sand, or just accepts that not everything in the world can be perfect 100% of the time.

As a perfectionist with an engineering degree and lots of work in cartography, Simon has trouble letting some of the mistakes go but he has said that it is easier to do that now with so many years of experience under his belt.

In the year 2010, Simon created a Facebook page to show off his work and it quickly gained attention all around the world.

He has over 273 thousand followers and is often requested to create his art for special events.

Simon has taken requests from all over the world and he creates a new design for each and every pattern.

Simon is fine with the fact that his work has a very limited lifespan, it is often fully gone within a day or two.

“Most people will only ever see most of the world’s artwork as photographs.” he has said, “Even with the Mona Lisa, probably only a minority of people have actually seen the real thing, but everyone’s seen a photograph of it.”

Simon takes his photographs by using a drone, or by climbing a nearby mountain to get a good view; as long as the sky remains cloudless, Simon is content with his photos.
