Potatoes are downright delicious, but baked potatoes can get… a little boring. There’s just nothing inspiring about them. Sure, you can add on condiments, but the potato itself is just one big lump.
Thanks to awesome food pioneers like Tasty, this doesn’t have to be the case. Now you can have your potato on display as the centerpiece of your plate. How is it possible to make the fairly ugly vegetable look so good? Turn it into a rose!
The potato rose combines all the goodness of a potato with all the beauty of a garden. Okay, so it doesn’t compare to a real rose, but it will make your meal look a whole lot more appetizing. The best part is that this recipe is that this recipe is fairly easy to complete. Follow these simple steps, and you will have a delicious potato rose in no time.
You will need:
- 4 yukon gold potatoes, halved
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 12 strips center cut bacon
- fresh thyme, to serve
- grated parmesan cheese, to serve
First, preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, or 200 degrees Celsius. Ovens take time to heat, so it’s a good idea to do this step before starting any of your other preparations.
This next step requires two tools: a mandolin and a hand guard. Using both, thinly slice your potatoes, and put the pieces in a large mixing bowl.
Add your seasonings. In recipes like this the seasoning is always best prepared to taste, but Tasty recommends incorporating olive oil, garlic powder, thyme, rosemary, pepper, and salt. Mix it all together in the bowl with the potatoes, making sure to coat each slice evenly.
Next lay out two pieces of bacon on a cutting board. Place them so that they overlap each other vertically.
Line the bacon with slices of potatoes. Be sure to overlap each slice at least a bit so that they fold properly.
Start on one end, and gently roll the bacon all the way to the other end. As you near your end point, you will notice that the potato slices have transformed into a beautiful rose.
Carefully place the rolled rose into a muffin tin. This will help it to keep its shape while cooking. Repeat the process again and again, until all of your slices have been turned into roses. Now it’s time to get cooking.
Place the muffin tin – with all of the yummy roses inside – into the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Then cover the roses. You can use tin foil or, for a slightly healthier method, use another pan. Replace in the oven and let it cook for another 30 minutes.
Top the roses with thyme and parmesan, and give them a little extra heat so that the cheese can melt. Leaving the roses uncovered, bake them for 5-10 minutes. Finally, you can eat!
Remove the roses from the tin, and have as many as you’d like. My mouth is watering just thinking about this recipe.
When it comes to food, presentation is everything. The way you plate your food can have a huge impact on how much you enjoy it. With stunning roses like these, your brain and stomach are both sure to be happy.
