It seems that some people will try and get everyone’s attention at just about any cost. A new, extremely dangerous challenge has shown up on the social website Reddit named the ‘hot coil challenge’. As the title suggests, it dares people to press their arm right on top of a burning hot coil of a stove for as long as possible.
Warning: some might find the content below graphic, so proceed with caution.
This new hot coil challenge is extremely controversial, to say the least.
Placing your body parts on a hot coil will almost definitely result in third-degree burn wounds and will leave scars for life.
The footage that was shared on Reddit shows a young man being dared by his friend holding the camera.
“See that hot [expletive] coil?” the man says to the camera. “Yeah. We’ve got to get your face, too. Your reaction will be priceless,” his buddy replied.
What follows is very painful to watch footage of a young man scarring himself for no apparent reason. We can clearly see the red-hot metal and as soon as the man places his arm on the stove, steam starts to seep up.
This internet ‘challenge’ is just as dangerous as it is stupendous.
The man manages to keep his arm on the burning hot coil for a couple of seconds, but his burn wounds look incredibly nasty. His skin is absolutely seared from the heat as the daredevil keeps screaming in pain.
These sorts of viral internet challenges have been popular for a few years now and it started with rather innocent dares such as putting a spoon filled with cinnamon in your mouth or eating a hot pepper.
Unfortunately, more and more dangerous activities have been involved in these challenges recently, such as eating dishwater detergent pods.
Known as the laundry packet or Tide Pod challenge, hundreds of youngsters voluntarily ate dishwasher and laundry pods as a part of the online challenge. It resulted in dozens of people needing to be hospitalized as digesting the chemicals can potentially have fatal consequences.
“The ‘laundry packet challenge’ is neither funny nor without serious health implications,” Stephen Kaminski from the American Association of Poison Control Centers told in a statement. “We have seen a large spike in single-load laundry packet exposures among teenagers since these videos have been uploaded.”
As you might expect, the creators of the insane hot coil challenge have been met with tons of criticism on both Reddit and YouTube, especially after the laundry packet challenge incidents.
“Darwinism at its finest,” one viewer commented.
