Since Cesia Abigail Baires values all people equally, when a homeless man entered her café in 2016 asking for money, she did more than just provide him some cash.

Then, 25-year-old Cesia inquired into his situation by asking the homeless man why he did not have a job.

Nothing in this life is free after all.

The man stated his predicament while lowering his head. He said that because of his lengthy criminal record and inability to obtain employment, he is forced to live on the streets and earn a living by stealing and begging.

In Minneapolis, Minnesota, Cesia is the café’s twenty-first owner. She has put a lot of effort into keeping her business moving, and the years have not been simple. But Cesia claimed that when Marcus, a homeless guy, walked into her café that day, she instantly felt connected to him.

She knew she had to help him.

She had previously seen him moving up and down Main Street, but they had never had the opportunity to speak until that fateful day.

Marcus didn’t have much of a choice given his situation, but Cesia made the decision to give him a shot by hiring him at Abi’s Café.

The man was ecstatic.

“I was short-staffed that day,” Cesia shared. “So I asked him, ‘You want to work? I have a job for you!’ His eyes opened wide and his smile made my day!!!! He said, ‘I’ll do anything for some food.'”

Before starting work, the café owner gave Marcus a sandwich, but instead of eating it all, Marcus wrapped half of it in foil and hurried outside to give it to a homeless person on the street. Cesia expressed how moved she was by the gesture.

He’s a really nice man.

Marcus showed his commitment by being on time each day for his two-hour shift—the most amount of time Cesia could afford to pay him for—to assist with taking out the garbage and washing dishes.

When Marcus received his pay, he went to Cesia’s restaurant and ordered meals, demanding that he pay, because it made him feel good.

It really touched Cesia.

“Do something nice for someone today and don’t judge them just because they [are] out there asking for money for we don’t know their situation… some deserve another shot,” she remarked.

Marcus hasn’t missed a single shift, which has only increased Cesia’s confidence in him. Despite facing a challenging period in her career, she believed employing him was the proper decision.

She gained a lot of compliments.

“A lot of people are saying I’ve been a blessing for him, but at that point, I was the one who needed a blessing,” she shared.

Marcus, who has been without a home since he was 16, has a long way to go before things change. And the two decided to take 10% of his pay and lay it away so he could learn how to save.

And just like that, his life is forever changed.
