A woman who got stranded in the middle of the street after her tire went flat discovered that help can often come from unexpected places. A homeless man from Ogden, Utah, changed a tire for her when everyone else ignored her.

The story was first reported by a store owner and his wife, who took a picture of the event. Ron Davidson, who owns Jessie Jean’s on Historic 25th and Black Lotus Coffee Roasters in Ogden, Utah, saw what happened from the window.

Chuck was the only one who helped a woman stranded in the middle of the road

“Hey, look at Chuck out there changing that girl’s tire,” Ron said, according to his wife. The couple stated that the woman was stranded on the street and that her car was blocking the road.

According to Anna, nobody wanted to help the girl and that everyone was driving past her. Chuck, a homeless guy who helps Anna and her husband around the cafe, walked out and offered to help.

Chuck’s selfless act didn’t surprise her, Anna said:

“I looked out and I’m like, why does that not surprise me. He’s a good guy. So I walked over and snapped that photo.”

Anna went further than that and posted what happened on Facebook.

A broken system

Chuck’s act should make us change the way we look at homeless people and gain a better understanding of the problems they are facing every day. However, Anna said she didn’t expect the photo would attract so much attention on social media.

“Our system is truly broken and I desperately want to be part of making effective positive change. Chuck is a great guy, but the truth is there are thousands of Chucks out there.”

Chuck’s criminal record makes it almost impossible for him to find a place to live, Anna said. She explained that Chuck also has PTSD, which makes life even more complicated for him.

“And the reality for me, and for Chuck and for everybody else out there, just show people that we have to re-humanize ourselves to each other and stop being so judgmental… we have to change the way we do things and it has to start grassroots.”

Anna’s husband Ron, overcame his addiction and mental health problems and was himself homeless for more than two years. His experience helped him gain a unique perspective on issues like homelessness and addiction. Despite his troubled past, Ron became a successful business owner and an advocate for the homeless.

Chuck’s new beginning

Ron’s story serves as an inspiration to Chuck, who helps the couple run the cafe and devotes much of his time to helping others.

“I wouldn’t be right here, right now, talking to you… if it weren’t for them two”, Chuck said about Anna and Ron. And although he still lives on the street, Chuck is determined to keep helping others.

After spending the better part of his life in prisons, Chuck seems to have found a new purpose. His story shows us that the homeless are not invisible. Like everyone else, they are also the members of the community and they need our help.
