Designing or renovating your home should be an exciting and joyful experience. Unfortunately, home remodeling projects can often go terribly wrong. We found 40 home designs and renovation projects that missed the mark entirely. From toilets in the kitchen to fur-covered staircases and horribly misplaced appliances, these astonishingly bad interior designs range from mildly unsettling to downright disturbing.

Way too color happy

Purple and yellow are beautiful colors. Most colors are—in moderation. However, this is just insane. Looking at this room full of clashing colors makes me dizzy.

Butterfly toilet

Oh, hell no! There’s no way I’m sitting on that toilet seat. Who wants any type of insect — even if they’re just pretty pictures of butterflies — that close to their… well, you know? Definitely not anyone with an overactive imagination.

Fireplace in shower

Have you ever had to take a cold shower for whatever reason? It’s really unpleasant, to say the least. Maybe that’s why this person thought a fireplace in the shower would be a good idea.

Piano range

There are so many things on this list that are just plain strange. However, the piano repurposed as a range hood hanging on the kitchen wall is by far the strangest.

Misplaced door

It could use a little work, but it has a huge selling point: it comes with a mother-in-law suite, complete with a door to her own private deck.

Dungeon bed

Hey ladies, quick question: If you were into a guy and discovered this was his bed, how swiftly and how far would you flee?

Misplaced kitchen island

The conversation with the contractor went something like this: “I really want an island there.” “Sorry, ma’am. Those are weight-bearing joists.” “But I really want an island there.” “Yes, ma’am. But as I mentioned, those joists are essential.” “But I really want an island there.” The contractor throws his hands in the air. “Fine, whatever.”

Chevy bed

This is definitely open to debate. Whether using an old Chevy pickup, or at least part of one, is truly a beautiful choice, and whether that same partial pickup makes for a good bed frame is up for discussion.

Freaky powder room

Maybe there’s some logic behind this madness. If your goal is to deter people from lingering in your powder room, this is definitely the way to do it. It’s eerie and somewhat unsettling.

Sink mantel

Who lives here? A 7-foot-tall basketball player? Because most people won’t be able to see themselves in that mirror. Secondly, who in their right mind puts a mantle in the bathroom?

Kitchen Jacuzzi

Since when did we decide to take the open concept floor plan to an entirely new level? Is the Jacuzzi tub in the kitchen a stroke of genius, or is it the other way around—a kitchen in the bathroom?

Upside down door

Do you dislike having a glass door because you’re worried taller people will be able to see into your home? Ha! Well, you’ve managed to fool them!

Overwhelming kitchen

You know that feeling when the light hurts your eyes in the morning if it’s still dark when you wake up? Well, this is the equivalent. Most people would need to squint tightly when they walk into this room. And to top it off, there’s a checkered tile floor.

Stairway to the basement

I’m not entirely sure what this room is, but my guess is some sort of wine cellar. If your intention is to deter people from lingering, then this interior design is spot on. I believe those people painted on the wall are running away screaming, not singing.

Furry staircase

Is this a life-size replica of those things that cat owners have so their cats claw it instead of the furniture?

Balcony pool

Are these people completely oblivious? This goes far beyond bad design ideas; it’s a serious safety hazard. There must be a weight limit for that balcony, and you can bet this far exceeds it!

Kitchen chaos

If you weren’t some sort of lunatic—assuming we’re still allowed to say that— to begin with, living in this nightmare would quickly drive you to madness. Before long, you’d likely find yourself twitching and drooling.

Staircase bathtub

Who on earth thought this would be a good idea? Statistics show an alarming number of injuries in the home occur while getting out of the bath. So why would you make it 100 times more dangerous? You’d practically need to be a circus performer to get out of this tub.

Fugly kitchen

Firstly, I’m not a fan of yellow, especially not in my kitchen. But let’s set that aside. I hope they plan to grow old and die in that house because no one is going to buy it with that kitchen. And while there might be valid reasons for having the dishwasher a little higher, this is just downright unattractive. On so many levels.

Barnyard room

City living can be tough when you’re accustomed to growing up surrounded by open spaces and barnyard animals. But there’s a solution—you can have the best of both worlds.

Fancy bathroom

I was so preoccupied with the horror of this bathroom that I almost overlooked something peculiar. There are clothes hanging in the windows that seem to be part of the window coverings. Why, though?

Flintstone house

Who resides here? Cave dwellers? The Flintstones, perhaps? Pebbles and Bam Bam, all grown up and married? One thing’s for sure, those door frames must be exceptionally sturdy to withstand that pressure.

Toilet spa

Take a moment to sit and soak your feet. You’ll feel rejuvenated. However, if there’s a man in the house, you might want to be very concerned about his aim. Shudder!

Moldy bedroom

Is anyone else suddenly experiencing breathing issues? The air quality in this room is atrocious. Now, who in their right mind would decorate with mold? It looks so creepy and disgusting.

Barbie’s house?

Is this a life-size version of Barbie’s playhouse? Or perhaps one of the Disney Princesses’? The walls alone are bad enough. But when you add the sheers and the multicolored cushions, it’s like a box of crayons decided to have a colorful mishap.

Hair stairs

These eerie stairs lead up to… well, who knows? Maybe there’s a serial killer living in this house, fond of collecting hair to make carpets. Otherwise, it’s a total mystery!

Lady lamp

In the delicate pink background, there’s a butterfly, while in the foreground, there’s the “sexy” giant lady lamp, which seems to be either carrying a peculiar purse or a boombox. And we can’t overlook her necklace and the flag.

Forest kitchen

I have nothing to say about this abomination, so you’ll have to chat amongst yourselves. I need to go look at something pretty for a while—or perhaps bleach my eyes. I’ll be back once my brain starts functioning again.

Kitchen island mistake

A spacious island in the center of the kitchen? Check. Legs and feet protruding far enough to constantly trip up anyone attempting to navigate around it? Check. This setup is a disaster waiting to happen.

Rubik’s Cube kitchen

What ambiance should your kitchen evoke? Probably one of comfort and calm. However, this “Rubik’s Cube” kitchen just seems to induce angst and tension. At least the dogs appear to enjoy it!

Wall dishwasher

Let’s set aside the unsightly kitchen and focus on the dishwasher in the wall. Yes, in case you missed it, there is indeed a dishwasher in the wall. If you’ve ever loaded a dishwasher, raise your hands. Now, consider where you typically stand, given that the door occupies about 3 feet of space in front. Are they standing on the counters to load that thing?

Seaside room

Captain and the Missus are fine seafaring folk. They adore sleeping amidst the crashing waves and beneath the constellations. But fear not, they have a sextant at the ready.

Living room coat room?

This appears to be a reception area. It feels like there should be a hostess standing there, ready to take your coat. What’s the correct protocol here? Do you leave a tip when you’re in someone’s home?

Floral bathroom

Is that entire bathroom covered in carpet? Or velour blankets? Towels? I really can’t tell. And honestly, does it even matter? It looks like someone REALLY liked flowers.

Home theater kitchen?

I’m not quite sure what’s happening here. That said, I believe this might be someone’s idea of a home theater. Let’s momentarily overlook the fact that there are appliances present. Don’t the curtains, the screen, and the object that might resemble a wannabe Oscar in front of it evoke thoughts of a movie theater? And that thing hanging from the ceiling could be a projector or maybe even a vacuum cleaner.

Bathroom fishing

Some people enjoy reading in the bathroom, but I suppose others prefer to pretend they’re ice fishing while sitting on the toilet… surrounded by dead fish littering the ground. Makes perfect sense, right?

Nightmare bathroom

Despite the striking orange color, this bathroom is just a little too basic. I truly believe they could elevate it with the right choices in towel bars, towels, and some really awesome rugs. And let’s not even get started on that bare window.

Torture bath

Imagine using this bathroom every day. The walls are awful, but the tub is the real problem. It’s rough and sharp—no one wants to get hurt while bathing.

Bedroom seating

I’m not sure what’s going on with the raised seating platform next to the bed. Kinda creepy!

Cow kitchen

You know how real estate agents emphasize that kitchens and bathrooms are crucial for resale value? Have you noticed how many of these pictures are of kitchens and bathrooms? What are people thinking?
