Random acts of kindness restore our faith in humanity, and this is one of those stories that really serves as a reminder of the good in people. When Kent saw a small puppy abandoned at the bottom of a canyon, he never even hesitated. He immediately knew that he had to do something.

Looking down the canyon

When Kent decided to go on a woodland hike, he had no idea that his life was about to change. As he was walking along the trail, he happened to look down into one of the many caverns and canyons. But instead of just seeing the bottom, Kent noticed some movement.

Looking closer, he realized that it was actually a puppy in a very weak and frightened state. Kent was extremely worried because the fall was close to 350 feet, but thankfully the puppy did not look like it had any broken bones or cuts. His best guess is that the dog had been abandoned there.

Rescuing the Pup

Kent knew he could not leave the poor pup alone and walk away, but he did not have the tools to get him out. He managed to lower some food and water down to the appreciative animal that day and then returned the next day fully prepared.

He tied one end of a rope to his ATV and then climbed down the hole to try and get the dog out. Kent made it to the bottom, and that was when another problem presented itself. The canyon was a vast maze of tunnels and narrow passageways and locating the puppy was a task.

He was prepared and had brought a dog basket with him on his search. With the help of some food and coaxing, Kent managed to lure the puppy into the basket once he had finally been located.

Forming New Bonds

The puppy was very weak and thin. His ribs were visible through his fur, and he was lying on his side, unable to stand up. However, even the puppy’s dire condition did not stop him from wagging his tail in a show of gratitude for his new best friend. Kent knew right then and there that he could not leave the puppy again. He decided to adopt the canine and name him Riley.

He brought Riley to the vet for emergency care, and the puppy began his journey back to health. It was scary at first, but slowly he began to recover and look more like the happy, healthy, and energetic dog that he is today.

With continues love and care shown to him, Riley went from an emaciated 17 pounds to a robust 75 pounds. He regained his health and blossomed into a healthy and active dog with a love of life. He has an amazing bond with Kent, and they have shared many adventures since the rescue. He loves to swim and spend time in nature with his human best friend.

Riley also has a new friend these days. Kent adopted another dog to keep them both company. They make a pretty happy group as far as we can tell.
