The Jefferson Davis Marching Band performed during the Magic City Classic Parade.
The students from Jefferson Davis High School in Montgomery, Alabama are a talented group of young people who have a passion for getting people pumped up and excited for a football game. And when the students had the opportunity to perform at the Magin City Classic Parade in Birmingham, AL, they blew everyone away with their talent.
The students, led by high school drum major, Justin Heideman, marched down the street, everyone could not help but keep a close eye on the performance. It was a soggy and rainy day, but that did not stop the crowd and the students from enjoying themselves. Justin, and three other lead dancers, directed the rest of the marching band down the parade route as the crowd watched in awe.
The drum major, Justin Heideman, is becoming a viral sensation for his band-leading skills.
17-year-old Justin Heideman is the head drum major for the Jefferson Davis High School Marching Band. He is gaining national attention thanks to an Instagram video uploaded by @Pubby LongWay showing Justin and his other drum majors performing that currently has over 600,000 likes. In an interview with ABC3340, Justin said that the morning after the video was uploaded, he had gained 800 followers and by the end of the day, had over 10,000.
Band Director, Brandown Howard, pointed out that, “You really can’t help but see color. Everybody that’s not here with us on a daily basis stands out to them automatically. He is the first thing that they see.”
But even with Justin’s rising viral fame, he is quick to direct the attention back to the rest of the band who lovingly refers to him as “Vanilla Funk”. Justin adds that he does not feel that his skills are anything special, he is just doing what others have done before him.
The Magic City Classic Parade is a yearly tradition held leading up to a rival football game.
The festivities surround the Magic City Classic are filled with fun and excitement. The Magic City Classic held at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama is the rival event of the year when Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University go head-to-head.
This game, in particular, is the “largest historically black college and university (HBCU) football game in the country,” according to the parade’s event page. The game’s leading events are half the fun with a kickoff show, a parade, a tailgate party and the halftime show. So for a high school band invited to participate, the Jefferson Davis High School Marching Band is no doubt worthy of such an honor.
