As women get older it is common for them to get thicker across their middle section. This former 80s model is keeping it real and shows her tummy, but wants women to embrace their curves and love who they are.
Though no one denies that eating healthy and getting some exercise in is important, sometimes those “bulges” around the middle still stick on. Instead of worrying about them too much, Heather is showing some fun “hacks” to dress as beautifully as possible. To start with:
DON’T: Wear too clingy clothes (especially horizontal stripes)
Horizontal stripes will just accentuate your waistline, and if the top is too clingy, then you’re just asking your body to bulge out in all the wrong places. Click next to see more to see how Heather fixes each mistake!
DO: Wear shapewear
Yes, shapewear works. You can roll it up in the tummy area too. Wear what you want and you’ll see and maybe even feel the difference.
It’s worth the investment.
DO: Wear high-waisted pants
High-waist pants that are stretchy with good material works well in hiding that midsection, especially if you get pants in a darker color for that added slimming effect.
Forget the low-waist and tight pairs.
DON’T: Wear “hip hugger” jeans
While hip-hugging jeans usually work well on a younger woman’s body, they tend to not age as well as women get older.
Instead of hiding a tummy, they tend to accentuate it. If you haven’t already, it’s time to ditch the hip hugging jeans.
DON’T: Tuck t-shirts in
Tucking your shirt in fully reveals that muffin top, and perhaps other areas you really weren’t intending to show in the first place.
For the proper way to tuck in a shirt, click next.
DO: Tuck shirt slightly at the side
Tuck it in slightly at the side and let a part of the top hang free in front. You’re hiding your tummy while creating a ruching effect.
It gives you an angled elongated look that just works better.
DO: Buy tops with extra ruching
They look like extra folds to hide your extra folds. But this one looks stylish so you won’t need to be breathing in and holding your tummy in.
Plus these tops are super cute.
DO: Wear a light camisole under clothing
They are super light, but not like shapewear where it sucks you in. But it holds everything in without making you feel like you’re wearing an undergarment that gets in the way.
They are also so lightweight you won’t feel overheated in them.
DO: Wear an overtop
Overtops are nice, flowy, and stylish. You can mix and match colors, go for long sleeved ones during chilly months or sleeveless ones in the summer.
It’s a piece that gives confidence and style.
DO: Elongate your look
How? Wear heels that match your outfit, especially with that overtop. Try and keep the colors underneath the same with the overtop flowing down in a matching shade.
Kitten heels will have you saying “meow” and look super cute.
DO: Wear an empire waist
There are so many blouses and dresses with an empire waist. You could tie it in so many ways, whichever way it makes you feel and breathe better.
Then loosen it up after a hearty dinner with friends.
DON’T: Wear oversized clothing
Oversized clothing hides problem areas, yes. But not in the most flattering of ways. If anything, they’ll just make you look bigger and have the opposite effect you might have been hoping for.
DON’T: Tuck a shirt into a tight skirt
If you are trying to camouflage a thicker midsection, tucking your shirt into a tight skirt may not be the most effective strategy.
Instead of concealing the middle section, it may actually draw attention to it and create a more noticeable bulge.
DO: Tie knot with a “ruched” shirt
This one is much better. The ruching hides that tummy and the top hangs over the skirt so it won’t draw eyes to your tummy.
You can also pull it down a bit more should you want to hide that tummy further.
DON’T: Wear a shapeless dress
Black is slimming they say, and they do have a point. But black and shapeless? That’s different. It just looks like a sack or a big blanket wrapping you and not accentuate your figure in the way you were hoping.
DO: Wear dresses that add shape with “ruching”
Ruching makes a lot of appearances in this article for the sole reason that it really works. Just look at how different it is compared to that shapeless black dress. Plus you can get these in different colors.
DON’T: Break up color with a short jacket
High waist jeans and a moto jacket. Looks really good doesn’t it? It does, for sure, but it creates a line along your torso that emphasizes that problem midsection you’ve been trying to hide.
DO: Wear a solid color under a short jacket
Go with a solid color under that moto jacket. I creates a vertical line while making that jacket pop. Plus nothing really bulges out too much.
DON’T: Wear bulky clothing
It’s a cute sweater, and surely other sweaters are the same. But they are bulky, and that just does not go with the goal of trying to look slimmer. Plus you can’t really tuck it in.
DO: Wear lighter weight you can tuck in slightly
You can still wear sweaters. And you can go for your favorite colors. Just go for lighter ones so you can tuck them in when you want to.
Pair it with a long necklace to bring the eyes downward to help make you look slimmer.
