It’s far too common for those with power and wealth, not use what they have to help others in need. Often, people with more money, give less, that’s how they stay rich. Fortunately, not all million and billionaires are stingy.
See how this well-known author gave so much to charity, she actually fell off of the Forbes billionaire list! This is a very inspiring story that you won’t want to miss!
the author of the Harry Potter book series fell off of the Forbes “billionaires list”, you won’t believe how!
The famous author hasn’t always been so lucky, she too had struggled with poverty in the past. This may be why she’s so willing to give such a massive amount. For nearly 10 years, Rowling’s and her children only scraped by because of government-assisted welfare.
In 1997 she wrote the first Harry Potter series which was followed by the movie series. The wildly popular book was an immediate success.
In 2004, her earnings from the book and movie sprung her onto the Forbes “billionaire list”.
For 7 years she remained on the Forbes billionaire list, all while donating large sums of money. Over the 7-years she gave an untold amount, in 2004, she donated a 160 million dollars(16% of her net worth) which took her off of the list. She clearly has a heart of gold, her empathy for those struggling is apparent, Rowling said:
“You have a moral responsibility when you’ve been given far more than you need, to do wise things with it and give intelligently.”
Lumos and Multiple Sclerosis are among many of the charities Rowlings lost her billionaire status giving to.
Rowlings has donated large sums of money to many charities, but beyond that, shes built a regenerative neurology center in Scotland and is a force for many other causes.
It’s so refreshing to see someone with this kind of wealth giving so much back! Way to go J.K.!
Rowling was the first author ever to make it to the Forbes “billionaire list”, she then gave away enough to lose that status.
Rowling created Lumos, the charity has helped tens of thousands of orphaned kids, both in reuniting with their families or finding a new place to call home. Lumos has helped over 20,000 children stay with their families rather than going to orphanages. Knowing the struggle, she also cares deeply for single-parents, often donating to One Parent Families, one of her favorite causes. On her website Rowling said:
“Raising children in an orphanage or other institution harms their health and development. It increases their exposure to abuse and puts them at risk of future criminal activity. Children in orphanages are isolated. They are isolated from their families and their communities. They are often hidden behind walls and segregated. Even when orphanages and institutions are set up with good intentions, care is tailored to the needs of the institution, not the child. Staff struggle to cope with high numbers of children, particularly those with complex needs. Physical contact, care and attention become a luxury.”
