Are you sick of having to wash your hair every single day? Wish there was an easier solution to keeping your tresses looking shiny and fresh instead of flat and greasy?
Good news, there is!
These 35 tips and tricks will show you how to keep your hair looking fresh, shiny, and healthy on the second and even third day after washing it.
This is the most obvious tip, but it’s also the most effective. Dry shampoos have graduated from the baby powder grandma used to sprinkle into her hair. They’re specially formulated to absorb grease without making you look like you’ve gone salt-n-pepper gray.
Diet totally matters when it comes to your hair. There are a bazillion different diet plans out there, but if you want beautiful tresses that look great in between washes, then you have to make sure you’re getting the right nutrients.
Foods like salmon have fatty acids that will give your hair enviable shine, while Greek yogurt has B5, an important nutrient for increasing the blood flow to your scalp.
You can find a list of other foods for great hair right here.
3) Watch the water temperature
Your hair is not a tea bag, so don’t treat it like one! Constantly subjecting it to hot water in the shower is a big no-no.
Founder of London-based salon Hare and Bone, Sam Burnett, has this to say:
“If you have oily hair a common mistake is washing with hot water and scrubbing the scalp too vigororusly. Doing this will actually increase oil production. I recommend using warm water and doing a gentle scalp massage with a cleansing shampoo that’ll target oily roots.”
You probably stopped braiding your hair after you hit middle school. But, they’re actually really handy when you don’t have any time to wash or style your hair in the morning. Some braid styles can even be worn for 2-3 days straight and still look good!
5) Add some pretty accessories
Don’t neglect hair accessories. When your hair starts to look a little bit lackluster between washes, glam it up with accessories like scarves, barrettes, headbands, or bobby pins.
If you part your hair down the middle, then part it on the left or right. It will give your hair instant volume since your hair isn’t used to lying flat on that particular side.
7) Wash your hairbrushes and combs
We’ve been told to wash our makeup brushes religiously, but sometimes we tend to forget that our hairbrushes are magnets for things like dirt, dead skin cells, and hair products. All that icky stuff get transferred to your hair as soon as you start to style it, so be sure to wash brushes and combs every single week.
8) Try a wet-look ponytail on for size
If your hair is already looking a bit flat or greasy, then slick it back into a pony-tail. It’s a great way to hide oily roots and it requires almost zero effort to style.
9) Give your ‘do the Aqua Net treatment
Hairspray can freshen up any hair style in no time flat. Layer it in the roots and blow dry for lots of volume. Just don’t go overboard and Aqua Net yourself back into the big hair 80’s.
10) Wash your bangs and go
The front part of your head tends to get greasy the fastest because of the constant touching. So, if you have bangs (or a fringe, as the rest of the world calls it), then wet it in the sink, style it, and go!
Take your time when you’re styling your hair, and you can make it last for days. Here’s what celebrity hairstylist
Ben Cooke has to say about doing it right the first time:
“If you take a bit of extra time with your initial blow-dry when you’ve just washed your hair it should last a few days anyway.”
Dry your head with a cotton t-shirt or a super absorbent terry cloth towel. It’ll help smooth away the frizzies.
13) A blow dry cream will help
Blow dry creams have oil-absorbing powders that can make your hair look good all day. You only need to apply a pea-sized amount to your roots before you blow dry.
14) Wash and condition your hair the right way
Don’t vigorously scratch your scalp with your fingernails. Instead, gently massage shampoo into your hair with your finger TIPS.
As for the conditioner, don’t put it on your roots or your hair will just get greasy a lot faster. You only need to apply it midway down the shaft and down to the ends.
15) Use a silk or satin pillow
A satin or silk pillowcase helps to reduce friction in your hair and keep your tresses smooth. It’ll also help prevent those pesky split ends.
On the days you don’t wash your hair, use a shower cap so your hair doesn’t get all wet. It’ll make re-styling your hair a lot easier once you hop out.
17) Stop touching your locks!
This one is really hard to stop doing, especially since we unconsciously touch our hair when we flirt with the hot barista at the coffee shop to nervously twisting our hair around our boss at work.
But, every time you touch your hair you’re transferring oil, dirt, and who knows what else onto your tresses.
18) Re-think your routine
Most kids have to be taught to take a shower, wash their hair, and brush their teeth on a daily basis. Well, now it’s time to unlearn some of those hygiene habits.
Washing your hair on a daily basis strips our hair of oils, and we overcompensate by producing even more oil to make up for it. That, in addition to conditioner, can make our hair a greasy mess in no time flat!
Once you get in the habit of washing every other day, or only 2-3 times a week, your hair will start to get used to it and dial down the oil production.
Give yourself a good scalp massage with your fingertips at least once a day to help increase blood flow and distribute oils down your hair shaft. It can be a dry rub – you don’t need to be in the shower or get it wet to get ‘er done.
20) Use a natural boar bristle brush
You can also help distribute the oils in your hair by running a natural boar bristle brush through your tresses. Boar bristles won’t damage, tear, split, or fracture your hair.
21) Tie your hair with a spiral hair tie
Spiral hair ties are way more comfy than elastic bands or even scrunchies, which can give you headaches if they’re wrapped around your hair too tightly. On the days that you don’t shampoo, they can be used to put your hair up in a ponytail.
22) Use a clarifying shampoo once a week
Even if you wash your hair every single day, it’s still not going to look its best if you don’t get rid of all styling products that have built up on the hair shaft. Only a clarifying shampoo can do that, so be sure to set aside one day a week to let your hair start over from scratch.
23) Use a deep conditioner once a week
Clarifying shampoos are harsh and strip your hair of moisture. On the same day that you use a clarifying shampoo, be sure to use a hydrating, deep conditioning treatment to put all the softness and shine back in.
24) Brush your hair before bed
Brushing your hair before bed is one of the best things you can do for your crowning glory. It’ll untangle your locks, stimulate your scalp, distribute natural oils from root to tip, and loosen up the hairs that are getting ready to be shed.
25) Switch up the timing of your dry shampoo
If you wait until the third day after washing your hair to apply dry shampoo onto your locks, it may already be too late to do any good. Here’s what celebrity hairstylist
Derek Yuen has to say:
“By the second or third day, it’s already too late to use dry shampoo. I always say ‘dry shampoo clean hair only,’ because you have to soak up the oil as it comes out, not once it’s already out. By that time, there is already buildup; your hair is already too greasy.”
26) Rinse with apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is the holy grail for just about everything when it comes to beauty, and there’s good reason for that. A good apple cinder vinegar rinse will help boost shine and restore pH balance to your hair in between washings.
27) Use a sulfate-free shampoo
Sulfate-free shampoos are much gentler for your hair and can help increase the time between washes. Look for something that’s mild and and has ingredients that can control oil production, like peppermint, lavender, or lemongrass.
28) Take a hair supplement
Every beautiful head of hair starts from the inside. When your diet is lacking and your regular hair, skin, and nails supplement isn’t working, look into these alternatives.
Supplements like niacin help to reduce sebum production, and green tea extract (found in tea) can help regulate the function of your oil glands.
29) When it’s finally time to wash, make it an event!
Pamper yourself on the days you wash your hair – treat it like a spa day! Indulge your hair with the best shampoo and conditioner. Since you won’t be using them as often, it’ll actually last you a lot longer.
30) Try the “No Poo Method”
Some women have chosen to adopt the “no poo” (no shampoo) lifestyle. This doesn’t mean you won’t be wetting your hair in the shower. With the no poo method, you can use natural conditioners, herbs, and apple cider vinegar to cleanse and soften your hair.
At first your hair will rebel and look like a big greasy mess, but after a while your hair will get used to not being constantly stripped. You’ll start to produce just the right amount of oils that your hair needs to look clean and healthy.
There’s nothing like a good backcomb to give your hair massive lift on the days you don’t shampoo your hair. So get out the teasing comb and hairspray, because this classic styling method is always a winner.
32) Find the perfect cocktail
There are a bazillion hair products out there, and unfortunately they don’t all work together. It’s important to find the right cocktail mix that works for your hair type, but that’s the real trick, isn’t it?
The best advice is to work with a professional stylist in choosing products that are right for you. Once you find the magic recipe that balances your scalp, you can go for four or five days without needing a wash!
By updo’s I’m not talking ponytails. Constantly pulling back your hair can actually lead to breakage and hair loss. Try a messy chignon or low bun to help greasy hair look more put-together.
34) Try a scalp treatment
Flakes of snow falling off your head can make anyone feel like they’re having a bad hair day. But, you don’t need to have dandruff to use a good scalp treatment. Sometimes a clarifying shampoo isn’t enough. Your oil production can get out of whack when things like oil, sweat, and whatever hair products you’ve been using start to build up on your scalp. That’s when it’s time to consider a scalp treatment to clean up the mess.
35) Don’t wash your hair at night
It might be tempting to skip the shower when you’re in a rush to get to work first thing in the morning. But, the problem with washing your hair at night is that it’ll be flat in the morning! Squishing your head against the pillow all night means that you’ll have lost all the bounce and lift, and you’ll be tempted to wash it much sooner.
