Getting the likes of pianos and karaoke machines installed in public places is always a bit of a risk. In the wrong hands, this musical equipment can cause serious eardrum issues to unfortunate passers-by.
But when a talented person takes to the makeshift stage, amazing things can happen.
Rather than horrify everyone with tone-deaf singing, they have the opposite effect – stopping people in their tracks and almost hypnotizing them with their incredible performance.
Carl Malone Montecido is one young boy who knows how to put on a show.
The blind schoolboy surprised fellow shoppers when he sang his version of Sam Smith’s ‘Too Good At Goodbyes’ on a karaoke machine at a mall in Bacolod City, the Philippines.
The impromptu performance, which was filmed on 5 February, quickly reached viral status when it was shared across social media. It’s currently on YouTube, where it has more than a quarter of a million views.
Amazingly, the video reached such dizzying heights of popularity that it caught the attention of Sam Smith himself.
He re-shared the video, and wrote:
“Who is this kid!!!!!? You are out of this universe whoever you are.”
According to a Ladbible article, one onlooker said that everyone who was passing by stopped in their tracks when they heard how good the teen’s voice was.
She added:
“We stopped and listened to him with the other people in the mall. The song was almost finished when I remembered to take a video.”
Carl isn’t just a random schoolkid who hasn’t been recognized for his talents.
He’s actually one of the Philippines’ representatives in the World Championship of Performing Arts, which was set to take place in July, pre-COVID.
He’s also been on an amateur singing competition, finishing in fifth place, so he’s no stranger to performing in front of a crowd.
Across the internet, the video of Carl’s impromptu Sam Smith performance was viewed more than 5 million times.
People took to the comments beneath the YouTube video to praise the youngster for his incredible talent. One person wrote:
“Ladies and gentlemen, these [sic] is why Social Media was created. For moments like this. I don’t know what happens next for him but at least he’ll always have this moment..😳👍🏿”
Someone else added:
“I wanna meet this kid and give him the claps he deserved like wtf, there was like 2 claps. His voice is GOLD.”
But one person suggested that nobody clapped for the youngster when he’d finished his song because they thought they were hearing the radio version.
Carl can certainly hit an impressive range of high notes like Sam Smith, so we wouldn’t be surprised if this was true.
If you hear Carl’s singing and decide you’re a big fan, you’ll be happy to know that he has his own YouTube channel.
Along with the typical postings of a teenage lad, including prank calls and family dinners, Carl has also posted a few covers of other songs.
His cover of “Heaven” by Brian Adams is just as beautiful as his Sam Smith cover. He’s also done a cover of Adele’s “All I Ask”, which is well worth a listen.
But if you’re a complete newbie to Carl’s singing, check out his Sam Smith cover first!
