A lot of things happen during weddings. It serves to celebrate the union of two hearts in love as well as a reunion of friends and relatives. It’s also the best opportunity to come clean to the person you will be spending the rest of your life with.
And that’s exactly what Kevin Taylor did. He had been hiding a secret from his bride, Kim Didway. And when he did reveal his secret, his fiancé could not stop the tears from flowing!
Around 18 years ago, a young Kevin Taylor broke his leg. It was during this time that Kevin found out he had contracted a nerve disorder called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy or RSD. This disorder is not an easy one to have. Symptoms include pain and swelling of an extremity. It can be triggered by many things, including injury.
What happened to Kevin was rare, though. Doctors admitted that it was the worst case of RSD they had seen, prompting visits and stays in hospitals roughly every month.
The doctors decided they couldn’t save his leg.
So, Kevin started using a wheelchair to get around. Despite the things he had gone through, Kevin never lost his zeal and love for life and laughter.
When interviewed by FOX 34, Kevin had this to say about his situation:
“The way I look at it is that it can always be worse.”
Kevin was grateful that he was still able to live his life–and eventually find a woman he wanted to marry.
Her name was Kim Didway. Kevin admitted that, for him, it was love at first sight. He went on to say that Kim never showed him pity or revulsion because of his situation. He said:
“She looks at me as…I’m not in a wheelchair. I mean, she looks past that point.”
Many of Kevin’s friends and colleagues thought it was a match made in heaven. When asked about her feelings towards Kevin, Kim said:
“It didn’t bother me because it’s the person inside, not who they are physically. And his heart makes up for any lack of limb that he has.”
After several months, the couple decided to finally tie the knot.
Everything was set. The venue was at a beautiful winery, and everyone had their outfits ready. What Kim didn’t know was that Kevin had been keeping something from her–and he was ready to reveal his secret on their big day.
Turns out Kevin had been taking physical therapy lessons without Kim’s knowledge. That’s right! Kevin had been practicing how to stand on his own–literally!
As soon as the bride started walking down the aisle, everyone stood up.
Kim couldn’t believe what she saw! Tears threatened to spill from her eyes as Kevin slowly walked towards her. She shook her head, still in awe of what was happening in front of her–that her groom was able to stand and walk with the use of prosthesis and meet her halfway.
It was a touching moment. The guests clapped and rubbed at their eyes. Kim was openly crying as Kevin hugged her. Kevin had wanted to make their wedding day the best day of Kim’s life, and he did.
Kim was so touched and awed by this amazing man who stayed resilient and kind even in the face of such adversity. This story is definitely a reminder to value each day we have on earth. As Kevin would say:
“Live every minute of everyday like it’s your last day.”
