The Great Dane's attitude changed as soon as he heard his mom scream.

Nobody should get a dog purely for security purposes, but there’s no denying that our canine friends make great deterrents to intruders.

Dogs are alert to pretty much anything. If you’ve had a dog yourself, you’ll know that a pup can be seemingly in the deepest sleep possible, only to launch themselves up and start barking at the mailman at the bottom of the road.

It also helps that dogs are pack animals, and are highly protective of their owners.

If they sense that their mom or dad is being threatened or attacked, they won’t hesitate to defend them.

In most cases, a dog’s bark is worse than his bite – but sometimes, biting becomes necessary.

When Tracey McCoy came face-to-face with an intruder in her home, her dog responded instantly.

It’s everyone’s worst nightmare: being burgled by a stranger who, for all you know, could have concealed weapons or a backup crew for if things go wrong.

Most burglars look for empty homes to break into, but Tracey’s intruder had obviously assumed that no one was in.

Big mistake!

As security footage in Tracey’s home shows, the man, carrying a bin bag, casually lets himself in through the front door.

Little does he know that Tracey and her son, who is blind, are in a room at the back of the house.

He stops to pet Dubai, the great dane, who assumes that the man is a guest.

But everything changes when Tracey hears shuffling and comes into the hallway to investigate.

Recalling the terrifying moment to WSLS10, Tracey said:

“I looked up and came face-to-face with a stranger. I screamed and the moment I screamed my dog responded.”

Dubai, who normally has a calm demeanor, quickly realized that this man wasn’t a welcome guest, after all.

He turned on the man and bit his behind, then pushed him back towards the door.

The man knew the game was up, and once the 122-pound dog went for the man’s face, he was out of the door much faster than he came in!

According to Tracey, Dubai isn’t usually vicious – he’s actually very sweet. You can definitely see this from the initial footage of Dubai curiously sniffing the intruder and letting him pet him. He just wanted to make friends.

But the moment he realized that his owner was threatened, his loyalty showed through.

Tracey added:

“The instant that I screamed, Dubai understood that that person was not welcome here.”

30-year-old Robert Ward was identified by police as the intruder. Once Tracey called 911 and gave a description of the man, police sprung into action.

Following Tracey’s directions, they were able to catch Ward, arrest him, and book him into jail for first-degree burglary.

Tracey is relieved that Ward was caught – but she’s much more thankful for her dog’s actions.

She said:

“It was pretty remarkable. Now we know what he’ll do in times of crisis.”

While none of us would hope to have to test our pet’s loyalty with a break-in, the incident certainly will have strengthened the bond between Tracey and Dubai.

That’s why they say a dog is a man’s best friend – he’ll do anything to look out for his human family.
