Thirty years ago Travis Ryan Smith’s grandmother wrote a song about what she imagined the splendor of heaven to be like. In her song, “Fishing in the Sky,” she imagined streets of gold, mansions on high, a place where you never get old or cry.
In heaven, she would have a sparkling silver boat by the lake that was lined with fleece.
Though her dad was up in heaven, she didn’t wish him to be back with her on earth knowing the glory and peace that exists in heaven. So, she would wait her turn but couldn’t wait to return home to heaven. What an absolutely beautiful sentiment.
She recorded that song on a cassette tape. About 30 years later, her son and grandson surprised her for Christmas by recording the song. Her priceless reaction was caught and that video and went viral.
“My mom wrote this song: ‘Fishing in the Sky’ about 30 years ago and recorded it on a cassette tape. Last year when Travis and I were up here for Christmas, we listened to it,” her son Robert Smith wrote in the caption of the video. “Travis has been recording some music lately; and about three weeks ago, I pitched the idea to Travis to get the lyrics and look into recording it. He remembered the song, and was genuinely interested. Today, I had the pleasure of sharing the finished product with my mom. Her reaction is priceless.”
Her jaw drops as soon as she hears the first few chords of the song.
She then covers her mouth and begins to squeal as tears start flowing from her eyes. She begins to passionately sing the song and make soulful gestures as she does so. The video of her reaction to the song went viral and was shared more than 178,000 times on the Love What Matters Facebook page.
According to Thunder Country 96.3, the video was actually seen more than 6 million times.
Travis Ryan of Blytheville, Arkansas’s version of the song was posted to iTunes where it reached number 30 on the iTunes Top 100 charts in the Country Genre, putting him right behind country artist Chris Young.
“I would like to say Thank you to everyone who has supported the song! My grandmother wrote a Hit and all she needed was someone too put some vocals to it! I’m so glad this song helps people all around,” Travis Ryan wrote on Facebook.
