Nowadays, nearly every adult out there has a cell phone glued to their hand at nearly all times. Our phones are necessary to stay in touch with the outside world, to look up information quickly and to do any number of other useful things. We may be just a little bit addicted to these devices, as it turns out. You can tell this is the case when we’re temporarily separated from our phones—and we basically can’t function anymore.
Even worse is when you lose your phone and you know it’s still in your immediate vicinity.
We’ve all had the experience of looking for glasses that were sitting on our head.
Recently, a clip has spread across the internet of this same phenomenon happening with a cellphone. The video was uploaded by YouTube user Marcus Zeilstra and was captioned: “Grandpa can’t find his phone that’s ringing everywhere he goes.” Sure enough, that’s about all you need to know to enjoy the clip. As it begins, the family is gathered outside as they try to help their grandfather find his phone as it rings. “Papa, do you hear it?”
Although everyone in the area can hear it ringing, nobody can seem to find it.
The family immediately rules out all the obvious places: it’s not on the ground outside and it’s not in the grandfather’s pockets.
As the clip continues, the family starts to use deductive reasoning to narrow down all the possibilities of where it could be. “When Papa goes inside, and you call it, we can’t hear it anymore,” the cameraman says. By that reasoning, everyone says, it has to be on Papa’s person! Still, nobody can figure it out. “I think it’s in your back pocket,” someone says. “It’s not!” Papa insists. Someone else tells him to take his pants off.
Although everyone is laughing, they can’t find it outside and they go back indoors.
Finally, the family goes into the kitchen and decides to try the phone one more time.
Inside, it gets a little easier to figure out where the sound is coming from—and it seems to be coming from a low place. “Is it coming from your shoe?” someone asks. Although it seems unlikely, the sound seems louder down by his feet. At last, one of the grandkids takes off their grandpa’s left shoe—and sure enough, there it is! When they finally find it, everyone cracks up laughing!
As the old saying goes, it’s always the last place you look.
