Do you remember the first time you flirted with someone? If you do, hopefully it went better than it did for the young girl in this video.

What happened at school today

The video opens showing Ella, a smiling young girl riding with an off-camera figure. The figure, who we can assume is Ella’s mother, asks if she played with the girls at school today. When Ella says “No”, her mother asks, “Why not?”

Ella bashfully admits that she was planning on playing with her friends. But she changed her plans when she ran into a cute boy named “John”. Ella’s mother is happy for her, especially when she sees how bright Ella’s smile gets when she mentions John.

You can hear her mother’s surprise when she squeals “Ooooh John!” Many parents will connect with this since it’s likely how they reacted to their child’s first crush. But, Ella’s mother wanted to know more and asked what were they playing.

Ella reflects on how she and John were playing tag. You can see her embarrassed joy and can just picture how happy she was to get to spend time with her crush. But then, her mother asks the question that we all want to know. “Does John like you?”

Ella was quick to answer:

“He said 50/50.”

Ella’s mother encourages her daughter by suggesting that all she has to do is work on that other 50 percent. But the well-meant words may not have worked as intended.

Love is hard sometimes

Ella surprises her mother by talking about how hard she worked to try and get John’s affection. In a scene straight out of a teen rom-com, we can hear and see Ella’s feelings as she tells her mother:

“I dress cute. I smile at him. I even wink at him. TWO TIMES! And all I get back is ONE. Fake. Smile.”

Ella’s mother can only listen and record as her daughter describes what she tried to do to get John to notice her feelings. She demonstrates her wink, she shares about how sincere and bright her smiles were. She finally talks about how she wasn’t satisfied with the less than stellar response she received from John.

She then calms down and quietly sobs and complains about John’s lack of reaction. We can see how much she wanted acknowledgment of her feelings rather than a lukewarm response as she lays back in her seat and covers her face. She stares at her palms and says, “Why is life so miserable?”

It’s going to be ok

In many rom-coms, this is the part where the female lead is given advice on how to win over the target of her affections. Instead, Ella’s mom asks her to demonstrate her wink. Ella, uncovers her face and asks her mother, if she means the wink she just did. When her mother says, “Yes” Ella sits up and look at her mother and demonstrates.

This wink is a lot more relaxed and fun than the one she demonstrated earlier. It’s almost as if sharing her feelings helped her relax and we can see Ella getting over her disappointment. The two women even make it a bit of a joke by demonstrating John’s deadpan reaction to Ella’s flirting. Though you can just tell that Ella is trying not to laugh.

Just another part of life

In just over a minute, Ella shares the embarrassment, frustrations, and coping that comes with flirting gone wrong. But one things for certain, the charming girl brought laughs and smiles to her viewers, especially if they’ve shared similar experiences. But we have to ask, when you flirt with someone you like, do you wink like Ella did? How do they react?
