A lot of people dream of learning how to dance.
I know I for one am always thinking about taking a tango class, maybe learning some salsa, learning how to ballroom dance just for the fun of it. But alas, it remains a dream.
It’s too difficult to commit to a weekly class, sometimes they can be expensive, and because it’s not a necessity, it’s easy to bump down to the bottom of your priority list. I have more excuses if you want ’em.
But this young woman ignored all those excuses and decided to teach herself how to electro-swing dance.
Electro-swing is a relatively new genre that combines vintage swing or jazz music mixed with house, hip hop, and EDM (electronic dance music).
It can also be called shuffling, which was really popular among the rave dance scene starting in the late 1980s and 1990s.
This girl was keen to pick up the skill, and recorded her journey and progress each month for an entire year.
She starts off in July. She’s in a small dance studio, with shoulder length hair, shyly moving her feet to basic electro-swing moves.
By August you can tell her confidence has improved ten-fold!
She’s now getting some arms involved and seems to be having more fun with it.
In September she’s really leaning into the vintage side of electro-swing.
She’s got a rockin’ cool hat on, and has effected her video with a black and white filter to really set the tone.
By October she’s built up the confidence to move her dancing outdoors.
She’s dancing down on a dock where she must feel pretty certain that she’s not going to make a wrong step and end up in the water.
In November she’s made some impressive headway and is showing off some fancy footwork.
Almost channeling a little Michael Jackson!
By December she’s really picked up her speed, which is essential to good electro-swing dancing.
She’s jammin’ to one of the most popular songs in the genre, Bom Bom by Sam and the Womp.
By this point, in January, a full 6 months into her transformation, she’s surely ready to show off some moves at a club!
Come February, I can’t really see how she can get any better.
I feel strongly that the hat makes all the difference.
In March you can really see how long it’s been since she began, based on the length of her hair!
April has her back outdoors, getting some fresh air while she grooves.
In May she takes her moves to the streets of the city.
And just when you thought she couldn’t get any better, she’s entertaining some boat crew who are loving her dance moves.
By July we’ve come full circle. The transformation is truly incredible. If you compare her first video to her last, or even to any of the months in between, you can see such a major difference in her skill level.
It’s unclear how frequently she practiced, but really by the six-month mark she was absolutely crushing it.
What a cool young dancer! I bet she’s great fun at a concert or party.
