Imagine being a 12-years-old girl who puts on an appropriate outfit for school only to show up and be told that it is inappropriate?
That’s what happened to 12-year-old Morgan, who walked into class in her Indianapolis school only to receive a two-day suspension because her “pants were too tight.”
It genuinely made no sense given the fact that her body was completely covered. Apparently though, the jeans were just too form-fitting to her legs. So she wore two different pairs of pants after that on two different days. On both of those days, she, to her disbelief, received more dress code warnings. No pants she would wear would fit the school’s standards.
“Frightened” is an understatement for how Morgan must have been feeling, with so many eyes on her clothes every day. She wasn’t doing anything wrong.
After the third day of “violations,” Morgan’s mom Traci finally decided to speak up.
“It’s unfathomable to me that there’s this big of an issue on dress code and not on her education,” Traci told RTV6. She went on to explain that her preteen daughter was naturally very petite, making it hard to find clothes that fit her in the first place.
“If it’s going to fit her length, it’s not going to fit her waist,” Traci explained. “I just don’t think it’s appropriate for me to be sending her to school in sweatpants, out in society, compared to wearing a skinny jean. I don’t really see what the problem is and how it’s affecting her education at this point, it’s dumbfounding. I don’t get it.”
The school was cracking down hard, giving Morgan two bad options: swap out all of her pants or serve two more suspensions. Traci wasn’t about to be done fighting back, though.
The school’s superintendent said: “As a high-performing school district, the Franklin Township Community School Corporation believes in maintaining a safe and orderly school environment.
“There are and will be times in which some styles of clothing are not appropriate or conducive to the school environment and should be kept as an option outside of school.
“Our school handbook is very specific regarding the dress code for middle school students.”
Morgan’s parents went on to share that their daughter has been wearing the same pants since the school year started and has only started having problems that week. Other kids and parents in the school district are also having problems and being negatively impacted by the strict dress codes, which they just started cracking down on only recently.
It’s definitely not fair for a kid — especially a kid who is so young — to be going through such a confusing situation. It is so hard for her to even find good pants that fit, so to have someone come take that away and suggest that she maybe should wear baggy clothing is completely crossing a boundary and taking away her freedom!
What do you think? Is Traci the best mom ever for bringing this issue to the public’s attention?
