Sometimes, strangers can turn out to be lifesavers.
This was precisely the case for Monet van Deventer from Cape Town, South Africa, who found herself stranded on the highway without any cash or cards to pay for gas.
Fortunately, a kind-hearted gas attendant, Nkosikho Mbele, noticed her predicament and stepped in to help.
Monet tried to stop Nkosikho from washing her windows, explaining that she couldn’t pay for any services.
However, Nkosikho, noticing the red warning light on her fuel gauge, knew he couldn’t let her drive off into potential danger.
He made a generous offer to pay for her gas, ensuring she could safely travel across the N2 highway.
Nkosikho didn’t hesitate.
He used his own bank card to pay for her gas, telling Monet, “ma’am, you can’t run out of petrol on the N2”.
He asked for nothing more than for her to return the money whenever she could.
Monet was so taken aback by his kindness that she didn’t fully realize what had happened until she drove away.
This act of kindness was even more significant considering Nkosikho’s financial situation.
Working for minimum wage, the amount he spent on Monet’s gas was nearly equivalent to a day’s earnings for him.
Despite this, he prioritized her safety over his financial security.
A few days later, Monet returned to repay Nkosikho, bringing along a box of chocolates as a token of her gratitude.
Nkosikho was touched by her return, feeling deeply appreciated for his act of kindness.
But the story didn’t end there.
Moved by Nkosikho’s generosity, Monet shared the story on her Facebook page, and it quickly went viral.
She decided to start a fundraiser to give back to the man who had helped her in her time of need.
The response was overwhelming, with the fundraiser closing at around $94,000, equivalent to about eight years of Nkosikho’s salary.
The story reached the higher-ups at Shell, where Nkosikho worked.
They nominated him for the Regional Service Excellence Award and promised to donate $35,000 to a local charity of his choice.
The chairman of the company even personally called Nkosikho to congratulate him and discuss the donation.
Nkosikho’s small act of kindness had a ripple effect, touching the hearts of thousands and significantly impacting his life.
It goes to show how a simple gesture can lead to extraordinary outcomes and how the goodness in people can inspire and uplift entire communities.
This heartwarming tale is a reminder of the power of kindness and the impact it can have.
