The age-old right of passage, the school recital. The teachers have been sweating about it. The parents have been bragging about it. The kids have been fretting about it. It’s a culmination of all that you’ve put into your child’s upbringing and education, and it all goes down in one afternoon.
She’s practiced for days. She’s told you how nervous she is. You’re swelling with pride and anticipation for her big night. It’s your daughter’s first recital, and everything is going just right. You made sure your phone was charged, so you will have this special memory for years to come.
The curtain opens, the spotlights shine. And you realize you’re more nervous than your little one.
Then something goes wrong. She knows it, you know it, and the whole school PTA knows it.
You’re coming to terms that what was supposed to be a fond memory will now go down in history as a viral video that millions will laugh about for years to come.
All in all, it’s a success, unless this video is used against her in college admissions.
The Show Must Go On
It looks like these little tykes haven’t learned this phrase. Used by show business folk for decades, Wikipedia states it’s meaning…
“That regardless of what happens, whatever show has been planned still has to be staged for the waiting patrons.”
This is the moment they’ll learn that no matter what happens they must continue as if nothing happened. When they grow up and star in a hit Broadway musical, they’ll be performing for an audience that paid hundreds of dollars to sit in the nosebleed section. And let’s hope they don’t deal with these setbacks in the same way.
What merits saying, “The show must go on!”
One little dancer is frantically signaling someone off stage, all while her fellow dancers twirl across the stage. Hey, whatever you need offstage can wait until you are offstage! The show must go on!
Another little girl wants to upstage the little boy sitting next to her, so she covers him up with her dress. Hey, whatever your co-star did, wait until you’re between acts! The show must go on!
If your shoe falls off as you shimmy across the floor for your moment in the spotlight, don’t visibly gasp and freeze at center stage! The Show must go on!
Your oversized lollipop was laid out on the stage ahead of time, and now the moment you are supposed to pick it up arrives… and it’s not there! Don’t pout while your fellow dancers continue the routine! The show must go on!
Your male co-star has bad breath and can’t remember his lines. Don’t cross your arms and scold him in front of the audience! The show must go on!
Your dance partner thinks her baby doll goes where you think your baby doll is supposed to go. Don’t get into a shoving match right up at the front of the stage! The show must go on!
I’m sure these young ladies will get over these funny moments, even if they have to relive it online for years to come. But for now, we’ll enjoy it over and over again. Just click the video and see why the show must go on.
