The quarantines and lockdowns brought about by the coronavirus mean that a whole lot of people are spending a whole lot of time indoors. And when you coop people up for such a long amount of time, they start to get bored. Really bored!
Luckily, boredom often leads to creativity, and the internet allows us to share ideas and inspirations with one another, giving people plenty of fun and unexpected ways to pass the time.
Over on Instagram, the ‘#homecouture’ hashtag has started to trend, with folks from around the world using random household items and their own clothes to try and re-create ridiculous ‘high fashion’ looks, straight from the catwalk.
Here are 50 of our favorite home couture looks!
1) Pretty In Pink
This guy has absolutely nailed that fluffy pink dress. He looks just about ready to strut his stuff at the New York Fashion Week or star in a brand new Disney movie.
2) A Work Of Art
This girl deserves major credit for pulling off a pretty faithful recreation of this weird, arty fashion statement. The painted dress has been recreated really well, but the strip of cardboard over the chest and rubber gloves are a little less fancy.
3) So Weird
Some of these funny home couture comparisons just highlight how weird the world of high fashion really is! When your ‘fancy’ look can be recreated with Scotch tape and a bathrobe, maybe you should ask some serious questions about how good it really is.
4) A Cozy Straitjacket
What a weird look! This is exactly why so many people say that high fashion is nothing but pretentious nonsense. Either way, the guy on the right has done an amazing job bringing this ‘style’ to life in his own home.
5) Not Bad
The face might not be as beautiful and detailed, but this isn’t a bad recreation! In fact, that black hat is way better than the original.
6) Cardboard Fashion Week
Wow! This girl managed to recreate a whole ‘haute couture’ outfit with nothing but cardboard! What a talent.
7) Lazy Days
Ever left the house with that ‘just got out of bed’ look? Well, here’s the ‘I’m still in bed’ look.
8) Read All About It
On a serious note, experts are actually predicting that the fashion industry will suffer in a big way from the coronavirus crisis. Many big brands like Gucci and Ralph Lauren have had to close down sites and cut pay for employees.
9) An Improvement
Many of these home couture recreations aren’t quite as detailed or intriguing as the originals, but we’ve got to say that this one actually looks way better. Nice job!
10) Like A Present
This girl had a pretty easy job with her home couture project. All she had to do was dress herself up in a big red bow.
11) Color Me In
Yes, some fancy fashion designer really did make a dress out of those old ‘color by numbers’ kids books. It wasn’t too difficult for this guy to make his own version, and we have to say he’s looking fabulous!
12) Get The Trashbag Look
We wonder what the designer responsible for the outfit on the left must think when they realize that their creation can be remade with just a belt and a trashbag.
13) Noodle Shoes
Pretty much anyone can recreate these weird-looking noodle shoes in their own homes. Seems like a waste of food though.
14) What Even Is This?
This has to be one of the weirdest high fashion outfits we’ve ever seen and the girl on the right has perfectly recreated it using pillows and random clothes placed all over her body.
15) Sleepy Time
You know that feeling when you just want to stay in bed all day long? This is the perfect outfit for that.
16) A Little Creepy
There’s something a little ‘horror film’ about this one. Maybe it’s the hair pulled down over the face like that, or maybe it’s the ‘body bag’ style of the actual oufit.
17) Soft And Fluffy
It seems like a lot of so-called high fashion looks can be recreated with one simple household item: a duvet.
18) Spring Is Here
What better way to celebrate the arrival of spring than by decorating your whole body with a bunch of flowers? Let’s just hope neither of these women have allergies!
19) Who Thinks Of This Stuff?
“What are you wearing to the party?”
“Oh I thought I’d just strap my girlfriend to my body and carry her around all night.”
20) Ready For Rome
This woman looks positively regal in those Roman-style robes. This might be another example of the remake being better than the original.
21) The Dog Did It Better
No offence to this beautiful model, but we have to say the super cute dog is making that paper bag work!
22) High Trashion
Why take out the trash when you can wear it? We’re not sure what kind of ‘statement’ the original designer was going for, but this look is pretty simple to do at home, if you’ve got nothing else to do.
23) All About Perspective
Here’s a clever one, proving you don’t even necessarily need to make an outfit to join in on the home couture fun! This girl and her mom created a high fashion statement using nothing but an old candy wrapper and a clever use of perspective.
24) No Idea
Don’t ask us what the designer was trying to do with this outfit. Both the original and the ‘home couture’ version look pretty cozy though!
25) May The Force Be With You
There’s something a little Star Wars-esque about this outfit. It looks quite similar to what Princess Leia was wearing in the original films. Either way, the girl on the right totally nailed her attempt!
26) Play That Funky Music
The original outfit did have a little more work to it than this remake, but the dramatic, broody facial expression of the guy is just too good to ignore.
27) Scary
Plenty of girls have accidentally gone a little outside their lips when applying lipstick, but this is just ridiculous.
28) Nice!
This might be one of the best on the list! It’s always amazing to see how you can basically recreate fancy high fashion looks with way cheaper alternatives.
29) What Planet Are You From?
All you need to do to recreate this crazy alien look is bust out your old CD collection.
30) Totally Gaga
This guy did a terrific job with his home couture project, paying homage to the always crazy looks of pop sensation, Lady Gaga.
31) Furry Fun
Some people are even getting their furry friends to join in with the home couture fashion shows. This beautiful black cat is doing her best Angelina Jolie impression.
32) Kim K Style
This funky look is all about the booty. Both versions of it look pretty weird. Can you imagine someone walking down the street looking like that?
33) Quarantine Couture
This is one of the more impressive recreations we’ve seen so far! The dress might not be as puffy and the headband might not be quite as grand, but it’s a great effort and the beautiful flowers make us wish we could all go back outside.
34) Boys And Girls
This brilliant recreation shows that boys can look pretty classy is typically ‘girly’ outfits! If we overlook the taped-together-cardboard-skirt and just focus on the top half of the photo, the guy looks quite cool.
35) A Wheely Good Look
Maybe when we’re all allowed to go outside again, we should all start dressing like this. On second thought, maybe not.
36) Messy Look
This looks like what happens when you wear a fancy dress while painting your house.
37) Master Of Disguises
This guy has appeared a few times throughout the list now. His name is Jordan Wake and he’s clearly one of the leaders of the ‘home couture’ movement!
38) A Future Fashionista
This girl is only young, but she’s totally nailing the supermodel style with her classy take on a catwalk classic.
39) Censored
Nobody would go walking around outside in this see-through outfit, but one of the benefits of being on lockdown is that you can wear anything you want in the privacy of your own home.
40) What A Weird Skirt
There is no rhyme or reason to this skirt whatsoever, but the girl on the right did an impressive job of making her own version!
41) Strike A Pose
The best part about this side-by-side comparison is the pose! The woman on the right really nailed that dramatic model look.
42) Spongebob?
Maybe this designer missed the memo but people don’t usually have straight edges and right angles. We’re pretty curvy, in general.
43) Ew
Are those supposed to be snakes or eels? Either way, it’s a totally bizarre look and the girl on the right is going to need to make some more of her fake snakes if she really wants to copy this crazy outfit.
44) Ready For The Catwalk
This guy looks totally ready to step out onto the catwalk and show the world his funky stuff. We’re loving the little nipple flash too.
45) So Emotional
Even though he drew the tears upside down and wore a yellow headdress instead of a black one, we’re giving this guy an A+ for effort.
46) Just Like Cara
This girl decided to channel her inner-Cara Delevingne for this ridiculous home couture project. We love the fact that she wrote ‘Razzle Dazzle’ on her cheeks.
47) Love The Socks!
The coat hanging off the left shoulder, the striped socks, the vacant, broody expression – Jordan has nailed every single bit of this outfit.
48) Perfect
Some people are so dedicated to home couture that they’re even willing to smash up a plate, tie the pieces together, and wear it like a necklace for the whole world to see.
49) Improvise!
Here’s the excellent Jordan Wake once again showing off the golden rule of home couture: improvisation! He didn’t own his own bulldog, but he did have this cute little British-style stuffed dog to finish off his outfit in style.
50) Is It Cold Out?
It must be pretty frosty outside if you need to wear such a big, puffy coat and so many layers underneath!
What did you think about these home couture creations? Are they all total fashion disasters or are some of them actually worth wearing? Either way, we hope this list of funny outfits can put a smile on your face and spread a little joy at a time when we need it most. Share the fun around with your friends and family and maybe inspire them to make their own home couture statement.
