You’ve definitely heard of Sia, and you’ve also taken notice of her quirky appearance. The brilliant Australian musician known for hiding her face behind a two-tone wig is also a music video director who has been singing in a band since the mid-90s. Unfortunately, three of her studio albums then didn’t really reach success. It was during the mid-2000s when she made waves in the music industry. She would later on release two more albums which both did a lot better, even earning certified gold titles by the Australian Recording Industry Association.
Not many people know that Sia is to be credited for the success of collaborations like “Titanium“, “Diamonds“, and “Wild Ones“.
Her songwriting skills helped propel these infectious tracks to the top of the charts, making people take notice of her distinct singing voice.
One of her more famous hits is a track called “Chandelier“.
With her unique sound and striking image, it’s no surprise that many others draw inspiration from her craft, even coming up with covers of her hit songs.
Take this awesome band called Scary Pockets.
Known for their danceable funk tunes and fun covers, they describe themselves as:
“…a funk band that releases weekly music videos, in pursuit of the funk. Scary Pockets is Ryan Lerman and Jack Conte, with the help and support from a rotating roster of the best session musicians in the LA area.”
Boasting over 500k subscribers on YouTube, the band has their own cover of “Chandelier”, and boy is it worth listening to.
Their cover will make you want to get up and dance.
While the original version includes powerful vocals and a slower beat, Scary Pockets made it work with a more upbeat tempo and laid-back singing.
In this video, you’ll see how seamlessly Stan Taylor (lead vocals), Jack Conte (keys), Kiel Feher (drums), and Shawn Davis (bass) work together.
It’s not an easy song to cover, either. Sia’s strong voice poses a challenge for musicians who are eager to take on the song. But Scary Pockets didn’t attempt to mirror the Australian artist’s singing voice.
They incorporated so much style and originality into it, that you’ll find it ridiculous to compare and contrast the cover from the original.
This incredible group of musicians sure know how to stand out. Watch how at ease they all are as they play, despite the high notes and the breathing challenges posed by the song.
Because they aren’t afraid to come up with their own style and share it with the world, YouTube users are even making requests for future covers.
Another detail one can’t help but notice is how at ease they all are. Smiling, playing, bopping their heads to the beat… nothing scripted, no signs of pressure. Just pure fun.
Let’s not overlook the female backup vocalists who brought so much into the cover. Rachel Mazer and Raquel Rodriguez rocked it. Because honestly, would the song have been this incredible without them? Exactly.
You don’t necessarily have to love Sia to be able to appreciate this cover. If you’re open to hearing new music or at least checking out covers of top 40 tracks, then this video will definitely add color to your day.
Watch this video and prepare for a serious case of Last Song Syndrome.
