TV’s popular Fixer Upper has impressed their audience again with a stunning home transformation. In season 3 of the hit HGTV show, Chip and Joanna Gaines renovated a barn owned by the Meek family. It had originally been built to house animals, but you would never know that after seeing the finished result. The home is now absolutely stunning. This is a transformation you’ll just have to see to believe.
Although the barn was originally a traditional barn, it had already been changed a bit by the time it came to Fixer Upper. The second story of the barn had been converted into a little apartment, and the bottom floor was made up of a garage and storage space. The apartment featured two bedrooms and a small kitchen.
This barn is hardly recognizable after its transformation. It is now elegant and inviting. Chip and Joanna had been excited about the challenge, as well as about working with their friends, the Meeks. “Chip and I have done renovations for our dear friends, the Meek family, several times before and we have always enjoyed working with them and couldn’t wait to get our hands on this project,” Joanna shared on her blog,
At Home. “I was excited when they decided to be on Fixer Upper, because they’re always ready and willing to take on exciting and unexpected projects others wouldn’t typically think about tackling.”
The team had to get creative when it came to redoing the plan of the place. It made more sense to keep some features where they were, like the kitchen. Others, like the garage, needed to be changed.
4) Joanna’s New Design Plan
Joanna’s plan came with a big to-do list, featuring essentials like new doors and windows as well as extras like opening up the kitchen. This was going to be a fully-fledged home, so it all had to flow together. No longer would this barn be an apartment with a garage; now it would be comfy, cozy, and relaxing.
The original model of the barn only featured a staircase on the exterior. Joanna knew that to make it more home-like she needed to add a staircase on the inside. The space under the stairs has been transformed into a study. The walls are filled with plenty of shelf space for books, and the floating desk provides the perfect place to focus.
The garage had taken up most of the bottom floor. That layout, however, didn’t provide a very cozy vibe. The garage would have to be completely redone in order to make the best use of the space.
The old garage has now been converted into a beautiful living room. The space is open and well lit by natural lighting. Stylish furniture dominates the space, but the crown jewels are the gorgeous windows.
The entire area is defined by open space. The interior looks nothing like the barn it once was. Now it is stylish and classy, although it has retained the country feel. The boxy lighting fixtures further emphasize the abundance of open space.
This family gathering room is the center of the entire downstairs. Sliding doors recreate the barn-like feel, yet the whole space is polished. This is a house that really feels like a home.
With unfinished wooden walls and plain flooring, the storage space looked much more rugged before the transformation. It looked dim and bleak – not somewhere you would want to spend a lot of time. It looked totally different after the home makeover.
That same space is now a lovely dining hall that could easily be a part of a mansion. The new dining room features a 17 foot table that any family would be glad to sit at. “The Meeks love to host family and friends for dinner parties so this unique and inspiring space is perfect for their lifestyle,” Joanna explains.”
Fun lighting and a clean finish really dominate this space, but it is the finishing touch that provides it with an extra something special. Baby plants rest in metal pots along the center of the table, bringing life inside the room. The black chairs are staggered in height, preventing the row of seating from appearing mundane.
Joanna’s metal artist, Jimmy Don, expertly transformed a handwritten version of Lexia Meek’s favorite saying into an artful wall decoration that the family would cherish forever. This was Lexia’s personal message to her guests, a way to make her spirit known throughout her household. It said: “They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts.”
Altogether, the downstairs of the home is now a total family bonding space. The living room and dining room are both completely family-oriented, yet they retain a clean and polished look. This will be a beautiful space to grow together in.
Joanna fell in love with the home she designed, especially the doors. She recalled, “My friend Dustin at Anderson Glass did an amazing job of making my design vision come to life with these doors. The design ties into the modern farm design I incorporated in the living area. Shiplap was installed throughout the house along with hardwood floors for clean lines and a fresh canvas to build on.”
Josh, the Meek’s son, absolutely loves Legos. The designers thought it would be fun to dedicate a whole wall to his favorite hobby. Here stands a space that is designed to be used creatively. A floating desk and floating shelves provide space for Josh’s trinkets.
The room features a soft bed, plenty of light, and a special space reserved for play time. What more could a kid want? This will be the perfect room for Josh to play and grow in.
The old kitchen didn’t look like much. It was tiny and didn’t have a lot of extra space. Joanna and her team decided to save money in their budget by keeping the kitchen upstairs, but they totally renovated it.
The new kitchen is completely transformed. It looks nothing like the old kitchen. Bright light and open space can be found anywhere. This stylish space makes cooking look fun.
This kitchen is fully equipped with new cabinetry and concrete countertops. The space is decorated by a bold patterned backsplash and a unique wooden vent. This would be a homemaker’s paradise.
The vent was painted by a specialist to look like metal, adding a unique charm to the kitchen. Joanna put a lot of care into the design of the space. She thought of every last detail so it would look perfect for the Meek family. “I chose to add this mobile wooden island to the kitchen to break up the black and white, and add some extra functionality to the room,” she shared.
No kitchen is complete without a coffee bar. This little bar makes innovative use of the small space. Stacked shelves leave plenty of room for glasses and cups, while the machine itself rests on the countertop.
This adorable Dutch door leads the way to a beautiful balcony that overlooks a lake and a greenbelt. The scene couldn’t be any more picturesque. This would be the perfect place to enjoy a morning coffee – or anything else for that matter.
24) Secondary Dining Space
In addition to its spectacular formal dining area, this home comes with a secondary dining space. This little table makes the ideal destination for more intimate family gatherings. It is surrounded by beautiful decorations and elegant furniture.
This table is much smaller than the other one – it only sits 6 people. This is a much more suitable location to sit if there are only a couple of people around and you want to be able to hear everyone. The people who sit at this table are much more likely to feel close, physically and emotionally.
The old living room wasn’t much. This picture was taken of the empty space, without furnishings, but you can imagine that it wasn’t very grand before the transformation. Joanna had to work her magic to make this place the masterpiece it is now.
This room features plenty of comfortable furniture, from couches to chairs. A large metal clock dominates the far wall, although it is missing its hour and minute hands. Intriguing wall decorations make the space mysterious and welcoming, all at once.
Joanna cares a lot about how her recipients enjoy their homes, so she tries to imagine how they will use a space when she designs it. For the Meeks, it was all about family. “I wanted to make this cozy space a practical place for them to gather together on a quiet weekend,” Joanna said about the upstairs reclining room.
When it came to designing this place, Joanna did not skimp out on any details. She transformed the barn into a home with a new metal roof, new siding, and new windows. “As a little addition,” she mentioned, “we created a small, fenced garden on the side of the home to appeal to Lexia’s love of gardening.”
This building was once a barn, but now it is a beautiful home. Any family would be lucky to move into this place, and the Meeks are going to have a wonderful time creating memories here. The finished product looks nothing like the barn that once stood there.
It is almost hard to believe that this stylish home was once a barn, but these photos have shown you the incredible transformation the place underwent.
