Some might judge the character of someone who didn’t follow the rules and wound up serving time in prison, however, that might be the person who ends up saving your life because they didn’t follow the status quo.
Aaron Tucker was staying at a halfway house for about a month after serving a two-year term for a weapons charge.
He was looking to start a brand new life and was riding a bus in Connecticut to go to a job interview when he decided to jump off the bus to help save a life.
He spotted a terrible car crash where a vehicle was overturned and tried to get off of the bus to help the crash victim. The bus driver told him he wouldn’t be able to get back on the bus once he got off.
“I asked the bus driver, ‘Are you going to help?'” he told ABC News. “He said, “No, and if you get out, I’m going to leave you.’ I seen the car smoking up, and the bus driver was still talking. The car started smoking, so I just ran out.”
Tucker and some employees from a nearby auto shop pulled the driver out of the car and to safety.
Tucker took off his shirt to help stop the bleeding from the 61-year-old’s head. The driver was later taken to the hospital.
“Someone needed my help, and that’s what I did.” Tucker said. “I helped them.”
Tucker missed his interview but he doesn’t regret it because he said it was the right thing to do. Thankfully, the interviewer decided to reschedule Tucker’s interview.
Westport, CT resident Karin Dale heard of Tucker’s selfless act and reached out to help him get back on his feet.
Not only did she offer to personally drive him to the interview, but she started a GoFundMe page for him.
“No matter what happened in the past, he’s a good guy and he needs a break,” said Dale. “I think he’s proven what his character’s like. He loves his boy. When he talks about him, he really genuinely beams through the phone. He loves him and wants a different path for his son than he had. He didn’t have a dad in his life and he wants to break that cycle.”
Tucker says he hopes to use the funds to start a small business and send his son to college. Though he doesn’t see himself as a hero, he’s glad that he has a chance to redeem himself and show his true self.
“I want people to acknowledge my good,” he said, according to the Connecticut Post. “If you know me, you know that I was a bad dude. I knew guns… I knew drugs. For the first time, I realized that that doesn’t really matter. I got a son now.”
About $59,000 has been raised for Tucker so far, however, someone tried to break into the account and steal those funds.
The account is on hold right now and Tucker is working his way from getting a Social Security card to a photo ID so that he can open a bank account and perhaps retrieve those funds if things work out.
Tucker is now asking people to stop sending donations, according to his GoFundMePage and the Connecticut Post.
“I want everyone to know that I am so grateful for all for the support may God be with you all,” he wrote on the GoFundMe page.
