We’ve all known powerful women in our lives.
Guelda Messina, 77 at the time of the video, is no different, and in this instance she really takes the cake.
She was the victim of a break in by three armed criminals.
The burglars broke in while she was sleeping on a monday morning, after her husband had left earlier for work.
All three robbers were caught on a security camera in Messina’s home.
Burglaries are more likely to occur during the day, not by much, but about 6%, because usually the homeowners are out at work or taking care of errands.
Normally, the homeowner would be quite unlucky to be at home for a break in, but in this case, the shoe is on the other foot.
These criminals had the misfortune of breaking in while Messina was home.
The video shows the criminals bumbling around and making plenty of noise, really having no care to be subtle while breaking the law. The guy in the brimmed hat drops things, spills the contents of Messina’s purse, and generally just doesn’t look like he knows what he’s doing.
Not exactly a cat burglar as much as a clumsy possum, maybe.
All the noise eventually wakes Messina up, and she is apparently not much of a morning person.
Messina walks out of her room to see the criminals robbing her and unleashes righteous hellfire with a commanding
“Get the hell out of here!”
Showing some slightly better judgement than they had previously, the burglars listen and immediately break for the door!
One of them even has to skirt around Messina as he runs away!
He looks like he’s running past a lion for dear life, and he can’t touch her because this lion is made of lava. You can practically feel the electric jitters running up his body as he runs out.
“I wasn’t as much scared as ticked off” -Guelda Messina
The video made Messina famous once the footage from the home security camera reached the internet, with people toting her as a badass granny!
“I’m a little confrontational, I guess. I’m sort of a ‘take charge’ mother. […] and I guess that was just my mother reaction.” -Guelda Messina
Messina’s daughter, Megan Bostic, says with a smile that she isn’t surprised her mom acted the way she did. Messina’s husband commented as well.
“That’s her. That’s my Guelda. She’s been that way since the day I met her.” -John Messina
Thanks to Messina’s decisive action, the criminals only got away with $20 out of Messina’s purse and a pair of earrings.
Now despite how well this went for Guelda Messina, the police actually recommend that you act a little bit differently: make your presence known to the criminals and then lock yourself somewhere safe like a bedroom or bathroom.
Here’s a list on how to reduce your likelihood of a break in, the biggest take aways were:
-The less cover around your house, the less appealing it will be to would-be thieves.
-You can place visible security cameras around your home’s exterior, they only need to look functional to deter intruders.
-Placing a dowel, board or stick into the track of sliding doors or windows will act as a second, unpickable lock.
