Fashion expert Mellisa Murrell has a passion for styling real women with clothing they will actually wear to feel beautiful in. She believes size doesn’t matter and a woman can look beautiful no matter their age or weight.
In her line of work, she tends to see common fashion mistakes she sees and demonstrates how to fix them. To begin with:
DON’T: Wear dated pants
Ill-fitting and oddly colored pants can make you look shorter, older, and even washed out. If paired with a dated shirt and the wrong pair of shoes, the look gets even more out of style. Click next to see more!
DON’T: Wear wrong length pant
Wearing the wrong length just makes you look shorter and even wider at certain angles. It doesn’t do you any favors regardless of the top you have on.
DO: Wear right modern jean cut at the ankle
Go for more stylish pants. Ones that are longer and better fitting to elongate your legs and make you look vibrant and stylish.
Be sure to match your top and shoes with the same tone.
DO: Wear a wide-leg pant
These are pretty popular at the moment. You’ll find these under different brands. It’s a very relaxed and stylish look you can pair with different tops and accessories, for a casual noon time look or an evening out with friends.
DO: Wear a heel with pant right at ankle
The right pair of shoes with the right pair of pants that fall to your ankles can give you an extra few millimeters of leg length.
It’s stylish and sexy without having to reveal skin.
DON’T: Wear a flat shoe with longer pant
It’s understandable that flats are usually more comfortable than a pair of heels. But with this look, it just doesn’t look as flattering.
DO: Show more ankle when wearing a flat shoe
You can roll or fold up your pants inside just enough to reveal some ankle. Take your heels with you and leave them in the car for a quick change if you change your mind since it’s a simple trick that works both ways.
DON’T: Wear a dark shoe with a light outfit
Dark shoes with a spring or summer outfit throws off the balance of the entire outfit. You’re going for light and breezy, and a dark shoe just ruins that vibe.
Plus it makes you look a tad bit shorter.
Better: If shoe is darker, pair with a darker accessory
But there’s a work around. Go for darker colored accessories to match the shoe. What it does is lessen the contrast of a light outfit. Mix and match to find the right look.
BEST: Keep shoe neutral with outfit
But look at how the entire look just works better with a neutral colored shoe. And you can still keep the colored bag.
It’s all about striking balance here and most of the time, staying neutral is the way to go.
DON’T: Add pop of color with a dark shoe
Going back to that dark shoe paired with neutral layers, just don’t. It looks off and just screams out at people. They’ll be looking at your feet instead of your entire outfit.
DO: Only add 1 “pop” of color
Go for shoes that match the theme of your outfit. To add color, go for a nice handbag that pops out from what you are wearing.
It’s the right look and it doesn’t ruin the style by grabbing too much attention.
DON’T: Wear above the knee denim shorts
It made a bit of a comeback but it’s a look that’s hard to pull off. It requires really long, slender legs paired with a good top to make it work.
DON’T: Wear tight shorts
Pulling or folding them up won’t do you any favors either. It looks forced, and your legs may look chunkier. You could probably wear these if you’re to do some DIY at home, but that’s about it.
DO: Wear a looser fit short
Shorts with volume make your legs look slimmer. Shorts that are too tight can make you look chunkier. Look at how cute she looks with these shorts.
DON’T: Wear a tight cap-sleeved top with a running shoe
Now first off, it’s a very dated top. Secondly, the cap sleeves are too tight making her arms look bigger. Thirdly, it’s a dressy top paired with a dark running shoe. That dark round shoe shortens her leg length, and then finally, the jeans just don’t work in terms of length.
DO: Wear a longer jean paired with heel and accessories
Go for a longer pair of jeans with a small heeled shoe. A simple, clean top and a nice neutral colored bag brings the entire outfit together for a smoother, sexier look that’s both casual and chic.
DO: Wear longer jeans and casual shoe for a more “casual look”
Her shoes are similar in height to her heels but this gives a sportier look. You get to keep the top and the long jeans but this time turning it into a more casual look.
DON’T: Wear a lighter jean with dark shoe
The wrong trouser length and the wrong pair of shoes changes your entire look. You won’t have that long legged look and those shoes just detracts from the look as well.
DO: Wear a light shoe with light jeans and accesorize
Switch to a girlier, prettier top then slip on a pair of colored sliders. Grab a same colored bag to complete your new look. This just looks so much more fun and is really pleasant to the eyes.
DO: Add a pop of color with light jeans
Elevate this look with the mule heels, add a pop of color with a handbag, and now you can rock that evening out with your friends. So simple and easy, and yet so effective.
DON’T: Wear wrong length skirt
The length looks all wrong. It cuts her off at the wrong point, so it just looks very dated. Women with bigger legs will find that this just makes it all worse for their overall look.
DO: Wear the right length skirt
A longer skirt that flows freely down just looks so much better. Find the right style that matches your body type then top with a nice jacket and finish it off with similar shoes that you see here.
DO: Show waist with wide-leg pant
The difference between letting a top hang out as compared to tucking it in. Wide leg trousers only work when you show that waist band. Otherwise, you’ll look blocky and you lose your curves.
DO: Remember to accessorize
Accessories can make your clothes really versatile. Add sunglasses, a bag, some jewelry, and you can change the look of the same dress or top. It’s all about choosing what works well with your outfit.
