Fashion can be tricky to manage. There are quite a few rules or guidelines we need to remember if we want to achieve a certain look. One of them are the fashion mistakes we need to avoid to look heavier than we actually look. To start:
Avoid shapeless dresses
For example, wearing loose clothing may hide our fat and flabs but it actually makes us look bigger.
Because the outfit is loose and has no shape, the clothes add ten pounds to our look. All that hiding actually emphasizes what you’re trying to hide.

Fitted is more slimming
To make you look slimmer or cut off pounds from your figure, show some shape. You can do this either by adding a belt around the waist of your loose clothes to reveal an hourglass figure. Or you could pair it with something fitted, for example, a baggy top with leggings or wide pants with a more fitted top.
Instead of hiding your figure, show off the best parts of your body.
Avoid a chunky sweater
Chunky sweaters are about as effective as wearing baggy or loose clothes. Unfortunately, you can’t save this with a cute belt.
It’s supposed to have a relaxed and casual fit but if your intention is to look slimmer, then chunky sweaters are not the way to go.
Pair an A-line dress with accessories
If you’re cold but want to look slimmer, do this instead. Wear a long-sleeved top with a sleeveless A-line dress. The best part about A-line dresses is that it’s more fitted on the top but then widens from the waistline to the hemline.
This creates an hourglass shape and makes your waist look slimmer. If you get even colder, you can wear a fitted long coat on top of it.
Avoid short and boxy clothing items
Just like with loose clothing and chunky sweaters, short and boxy clothes give you a shapeless figure.
It doesn’t show off your greatest assets and it accentuates the body parts you want to hide. Avoid these types of clothes at all costs.
Choose a flattering length
Instead, look for an item with the right length that flatters your body. It could fall on the hips or by your knees.
Make sure your coat is tailored, too, once again, to give you an hourglass figure.
Avoid a full pleated skirt
Pleated skirts are cute. They’re very sexy, feminine, and flowy and that’s where the problem lies. Because pleated skirts are flowy, they open up and add volume to the body.
So avoid pleated skirts and dresses if you don’t want to look heavier.
Choose fitted skirt
Wearing a fitted skirt will help elongate your body. Plus points if you wear a high-waisted fitted skirt, too. You can pair this with a fitted top or a loose top.
Just make sure to give your loose top shape with a belt.
Avoid a knitted dress
The tendency sometimes when we want to be comfortable is to wear stretchy fabrics. These fabrics, like knitted dresses, will cling to your body and highlight your flaws even more.
And it will hug your curves in the wrong way. Nope. Knit fabrics (and stretchy fabrics in general) are not flattering for those who want to look slimmer.
Add a belt to create a waistline
If you don’t have a choice but to wear an outfit that hides your figure, wear a belt to help define your waist. Make sure that the best is around two to three inches thick and wear it where your waist falls.
By all means, do not wear a skinny belt, especially if you have a bigger stomach area. It’ll make your stomach bulge even more.
Avoid skinny-cropped pants
Skinny pants are already one item you need to avoid because they emphasize the parts that need to be hidden. Cropped pants make your legs look thicker.
Skinny-cropped pants? Avoid at all costs!
Choose longer skinny jeans
Get a pair of black skinny jeans. Make sure they end just above the ankles to give the illusion of longer and slimmer legs.
It may take you a few tries to get the perfect pair though but once you have them, you’re going to look slimmer.
Avoid long bulky sweaters
Because long, bulky sweaters have used a lot of material when you wear them, it makes your body visually larger, even if it isn’t. It’s also shapeless and clings to your body where it shouldn’t.
And because this type of sweater falls on your hips, it hides your waist and all your curves.
Choose a shorter and lighter-weight sweater
When wearing a sweater, you can wear a shorter one that falls on top of your hips. A light sweater will also give you that relaxed, casual look plus it will help highlight your best features.
Isn’t that so much better than what a bulky sweater will make you look?
Avoid skin-tight clothing
Stop squeezing your body into something that’s too small. Tight clothes don’t highlight your features, they focus on your flaws.
Do you really want to wear clothes that make you look unflattering?
Choose a looser and more fitted style
In other words, wear an outfit that’s more tailored to your body. That will help accentuate your best features. Direct the eye to where you want them to look.
Choose flowy and light fabrics as well to give you that loose but fitted outfit.
Avoid unflattering lengths
Clothes that end too early or are too short can make you look clunky. Wearing bottoms that end at the middle part of your calves makes your legs look thick and clunky.
When you wear tops that are shapeless and too long, it makes you look heavier than you normally look. So avoid lengths that do not look good on you at all.
Choose a longer jacket with a skirt
How can you turn it around? Wear a longer skirt that falls above the ankles. Swap your long bulky sweater for a tailored jacket or blazer.
Choose one that falls just below the hips and pair it with a fitted top. Now, you’ll look taller, leaner, and slimmer.
Avoid an unstructured cut
Stop wearing clothes that have no structure. We need to embrace our flaws, yes, but it doesn’t mean we need to show off all our flaws.
Unstructured clothes just make you look bulky and shapeless.
Choose a cut that adds detail
Always go for tailored. You can use a coat to hide your clothes underneath or avoid emphasizing your flaws.
But always remember to wear tailored coats. It makes a big difference.
