You will not believe the incredible transformation Oprah gave this farmer.
In addition to interviewing celebrities, sharing beauty secrets, and more, Oprah also gave the occasional person a makeover on the “Oprah Winfrey Show.” A few years ago, she gave “The Farmer in the Dell” a “hunky makeover,” and the transformation is unbelievable.
The YouTube video of this segment is captioned:
“When Oprah’s producers first saw Jason, they stopped dead in their tracks. They knew that beneath the baggy overalls, the long bleached goatee and the tattered cowboy hat, there was a handsome man yearning to be set free. Watch as Tim Gunn and celebrity hairstylist Diana Schmidtke work their makeover magic.”
The team originally came across Jason while in a local Lowe’s.
In the introduction, Oprah called Jason a “makeover dream.” She then asked Tim for his first impressions.
“To be honest, I thought, ‘This is a Halloween costume.’ Really, who navigates the real world looking like that?”
Tim referred to Jason’s look before the makeover as “cowboy meets farmer in the dell” with “apologies to farmers everywhere.” He was originally wearing a cowboy hat, oversized overalls with a hole in one pant leg, and a baggy gray hoodie underneath.
When Jason came out in his new look, you can see that Tim and Diana let him keep elements of his style while creating an appearance that is much more put together.
He still had a cowboy hat, but this one was black and much more elegant in appearance. Jason was wearing a striped button-down shirt with a beige blazer over it, allowing him to keep the farmer appearance without sacrificing style. He also had nice shoes on and dark jeans without any holes, and the bleached goatee was gone, with a clean shave left behind. The result was a nice, polished appearance that still let everyone know he is likely a farmer.
Jason even had a rose to give to Tim, something which made the famous stylist laugh. He then handed another to Oprah and gave them each a hug. Of the transformation, Oprah said that Jason now looked like Kenny Chesney, which is a pretty accurate description of the new style. She exclaimed:
“I love it. I love the cowboy hat.”
In response to Oprah saying that Jason “has gotta feel better” after his makeover, he agreed.
“I feel fantastic.”
Then, Oprah asked a very important question we’ve all been wondering: What “was going on with that outfit?”
“I was just getting done with the day at work, whatever, and we decided we had to go to Lowe’s to get some tools. And next thing I know, I got mean mugged by a bunch of cameramen.”
Jason admitted:
“You wouldn’t believe the looks I always got.”
He agreed with Tim when he added “for all the wrong reasons.”
Oprah then asks Tim how he “even decided what to do.”
Tim explained:
“I have a very Socratic approach to getting one’s fashion right. So a Q and A with Jason about how he sees himself and who his own style mentors are. And we got to Tim McGraw and the country-western aspects. And using a classically tailored jacket, but with a nod to western flair with the western yoke.”
Tim also threw in a “pair of jeans that fits and a cowboy boot that he loves.” Tim said that they:
“Had to get rid of the straw hats that Jason’s been walking around in.”
Apparently Jason has three different hats to rotate.
Then, Oprah asked Diana about her approach. She explained:
“Immediately the beard had to go. You know, look at his smile. He has such a charming smile, and I just wanted to see it clean.”
With such an amazing makeover, the only question remains whether Jason kept it up. Unfortunately, there isn’t a follow-up available, so we will not know the answer.
