In central Kansas they were born and raised and on the family farm is where they spent most of their days.

Alas, unlike the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the Peterson brothers – Greg (30), Nathan (27), and Kendal (25) – aren’t on their way across the country.

But just because their jobs are traditional doesn’t mean they can’t take advantage of contemporary ways of getting the word out about what they do.

In fact, the brothers have a suite of social media sites that teach people all about how their farm – and the agricultural experience and food chain, in general – work.

It’s enlightening!

In addition to posting informational videos and personal vlogs (video blogs) on their YouTube channel, “Peterson Family Farm”, the brothers mix things up every now and then with some parody content that both funny AND educational.

And those videos are how they draw in most of their fans (some of whom do stick around to learn more about farming!).

Teaching through humor

Nearly a quarter of a million people subscribe to their channel and parody videos – which they began making in 2012 with a viral hit called “I’m Farming and I Grow It,” (based on “I’m Sexy and I Know It” by LMFAO) – often get millions of views.

Other viral videos include 2012’s Farmer Style (a “Gangnam Style” parody) and more recent hits such as 2018’s Tractorstuck (based on “Thunderstruck”), and 2019’s Crazy Grain (a “Crazy Train” parody).

But we’re big fans of their 2013 video A Fresh Breath of Farm Air (a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air parody).

That “fresh” farm air

Now this is a story all about how
Our life is spent wiping sweat off our brow
And we’d like to take a minute just to stop and say
What goes down on the farm in a typical day

Those are the opening lyrics to the Fresh Prince/Air parody and they were enough to get us hooked – especially since we’re curious as to how this whole “fresh” farm air thing is going to pan out.

We’ve never been on a farm and been enticed to take a deep breath.

The brothers talk about how they tend to cattle and take on the grueling work of growing our food.

But instead of whistling for a cab, they rap about “Fixing tires, building fence, chasing cattle back in.”

Baling hay, growing wheat, corn, and beans, and a little Bible study round out their days.

And what of the infamous line “And I yelled to the cabby ‘Yo, homes smell you later'”? Oh, there’s still a smell alright.

Their rap ends with the same sentiment:

We pull out of the yard about seven or eight
And we yell to the cattle, “Yo, steers, smell ya later!
We gaze on the farm with a peaceful stare
As we all take in a fresh breath of farm air

A vital lesson

While the brothers are clearly having some fun, there’s a lesson to be learned here – and that’s that there are real people out there to produce the food we so often take for granted.

And commenters seemed to love the lighthearted look into farm life.

“I love how you guys educate people on where their food is coming from.

Most people have no idea about the actual process,” said one viewer.

Other viewers said:

It’s easy to forget about farmers, especially if you live in a city and don’t often see crops growing around you.

But the Peterson brothers are dedicated to changing that – and doing it in a way that also entertains people.
