You don’t typically think of big yellow school buses as a place to live.
They aren’t exactly the most comfortable, even just to sit in for a short ride. The seats are stiff, there is not a ton of leg room, and usually, you can feel every little bump in the road. They have a clear reputation among students who ride them every day out of necessity — they are merely a purgatory-like place and nothing more.
But what happens if you rip everything out of the bus and completely over from scratch? Then, is it worthy of becoming a new habitat for humans?
This family of four who has a young daughter had the idea to make something out of a school bus, and it actually turned out to be genius.
“Having a kid kind of triggered this desire in me to do something that was not as much for me, as it was for a family. I wanted to put my energy into a family idea,” the father explained.
He went on to explain that he had a yearning to go on a special adventure with his family. He wanted to quit his job, encourage his wife to pursue her dream of photography, and simply enrich their daughter’s life by putting everything they can into it.
“Can we live a ridiculous lifestyle?” he asked. He wondered if they could make a home out of a bus.
So he found a school bus that is super rare — only made 2,800 in California — which is exactly why they wanted it. It was special. So they flew to California to get it.
“This is a project that tested every one of my capabilities,” the father said, who had a little bit of construction experience under his belt but nothing that could have prepared him for this massive undertaking. There are so many things to consider — plumbing, water storage, electricity, and then of course, making sure it is even safe to drive down the road.
“It has been a mind-exploding, creative problem-solving project experience.”
“I want her to remember the feelings that she had, like ‘mommy and daddy were crazy, we had adventures, and I grew up in a school bus,'” the father said, explaining that his daughter is young so he knows that she is not going to remember every single thing.
Then the mother went on to give a tour of their beautiful home. The original windows were kept and allow for nice air flow, they have two couches in their “living room” (which are RV mattresses), and they painted the floors white.
They also utilize the space well by adding things like tables that can fold down when they need a little more room. And of course, all the couches pull up, so they can store things underneath there as well.
The kitchen offers 5 feet of counter space on both sides. One side is the cooking and prep area, the other side is the sink and dish area.
Overall, it’s a really well-organized space, and it actually doesn’t seem to crazy for a family to live in once you see it! Should we all start living out of buses?!
