The Pokini family pretty much lived out everyone’s wildest dream not too long ago when they grew the world’s heaviest avocado in Hawaii.
The fruit clocked in at a whopping 5.6 pounds.
A 5.5 pound avocado, which was grown by Felicidad Pasalo in Hilo, Hawaii, earned the world record for the world’s heaviest avocado in January 2018 in the Guinness Book of World Records.
That is, until the Pokini family came along. Very much to their surprise, they now hold the record!
CNN reported that, according to Juliane Pokini, the family got the avocado seed from her brother-in-law, who got it from his parents’ avocado tree in Kailua, Oahu.
The 5.6 pounder is 15 times the size of a regular six-ounce avocado. It took approximately 10 months for the avocado to reach it’s overwhelmingly large size.
“While it was still in the pot it was pulled out twice by our son, we didn’t think it would survive but it did,” Juliane went on to share. “When we planted it in the ground, we never did anything to it except for some trimming every now and then.”
The application for the record was a lengthy process — it took Guinness about three months to accept it — and the process of growing it wasn’t all rainbows and sunshine either. It took quite a lot of patience.
And when the record was accepted, the Pokini family had to provide evidence to Guinness that they actually did beat the record. It took the family enlisting witnesses who could be there as they weighed the fruit on a certified scale.
“For us it was having experts and witnesses available at the time of weighing the avocado along with a certified scale. We also had to have everyone fill out a witness statement along with videotaping.”
Juliane also added that it then took about another three months after that… That was when they actually earned the title.
If you are wondering just how big a 5.6 pound avocado is, Juliane reports that “this avo was about the size of my 12-year-old son’s head.” We don’t know about you, but the size of a young boy’s head seems abnormally large when you are talking about avocados, which are usually a little bit smaller than the average hand.
So, what do you do when you have an avocado that massive? Well there are many options when you have an avocado that is big enough to feed 20 people (actually).
You could make a lot of avocado toast for breakfast for the next couple of months or you could slice some of it up in about a hundred salads. You could also use it to elevate a great sandwich or add it to your pasta, or make avocado fries or avocado salad. You can even crack an egg in an avocado and bake it for a delicious savory breakfast.
The Pokini family made a great choice and went ahead and made a ton of guacamole. Nothing like a bucket of guacamole for an entire family! They are going to try to continue growing massive avocados in the future as well.
