If you or someone in your family stumbled upon a million dollars, would you keep it or return it?
This Virginia-based family recently had to ask themselves that question and thankfully, they are now being praised for their solid honesty. Seriously, this might just be the most trustworthy family ever after this little incident they stumbled upon.
Emily Schantz, a school teacher, had been out with her family last week. They were on a weekend drive, cruising through Caroline County. It was there that they saw a car in front of them unexpectedly swerve in order to avoid a big bag in the middle of the road.
Before they even knew the bag was filled with cash, the family proved to be good citizens by pulling over to move the bag out of the way.
They weren’t able to swerve like the car in front of them did, and they wanted to make sure the road was safe.
They simply assumed the bag was filled with junk, so they threw it in the back just to get it out of the way. They’d deal with it and dispose of it later.
You can probably see what happened next: When they went to go through the bags, they soon realized they were definitely not filled with junk. Instead, they were filled with dozens of plastic packages that were filled with piles of cash.
If the money had gotten into anybody else’s hands, this story might have taken a different turn. However, Emily and her husband decided to do the right thing and turn all of the cash into the police.
Emily and her husband wanted to teach their sons how to be honest, so this was definitely a great way to do it.
It turns out that the reasoning behind the bags being in the middle of the road is still a mystery. Police do not understand how it ended up there but they believe that the postal service had been delivering the bags to a local bank.
Despite what is happening with the cash though, it is clear that Emily and her family definitely deserve to be praised. Finding a million dollars and then deciding to give it up is no easy task — it takes a lot of willpower and honesty!
“For someone so honest and willing to give that almost a million dollars back — it’s exceptional on their part,” Caroline County Police Major Scott Moser told WTVR. “Their two sons were there, so I put the lights on for them, but we are proud that they represented this county well by being so honest.”
“You do the right thing and return it, because it doesn’t belong to us,” Emily went on to tell WTVR.
It is no doubt that this couple set an exceptional example for their children. Hopefully we can have more people like these two in the world — they have done nothing but good!
