The coronavirus saga continues, changing the lives of collective humanity. Some struggle to adjust, while others have taken advantage of the newfound “free time.” The Buchanan family has been hard at work in the wake of changing circumstances.
This crew isn’t exactly the Wu-Tang Clan, but their weary souls and months of quarantining offer an uninhibited, worthy perspective on the current state of the world. Their “Family Lockdown Boogie” is a banger.
The music starts with a closeup. A pulsating 80s-esque synth line and drum kick occupy the airwaves. Jack Buchanan, the brains beyond the production, kicks things off with a comical, embellished deep voice straight out of an early disco song. His first words set the tone,
“This one goes out to anyone who’s on coronavirus lockdown… with their immediate family. This is the family lockdown boogie.”
A glimpse of the entire crew in the hallway near the front door flashes across the screen. Jack’s sporting a shirt that fittingly reads “Everything is Awful” in bright orange text. The crew’s production proves that fortunately, not everything is awful.
The “Family Lockdown Boogie” music video packs a ton of humor. The production cycles through a handful of gags set in different spots around the house, featuring zany choreography.
One scene features the family crammed into a bathroom vigorously washing their hands in true coronavirus fashion.
“We’re stuck here in the house for the next four weeks or so. And we won’t be going out because the government said no.”
Jack changes his flow often, just like a talented rapper, keeping things fresh over the course of the piece.
So for the family’s sanity can’t you see what we must do?
The tone remains comical throughout, paying direct homage to 80s musical styles from the vocals to the accompaniment. About a minute into the song, a funny call and response involves all members of the household.
A montage of the group dancing throughout different areas of the house begins. Their antics are witty and wild. Mom and dad look genuinely enthused.
The chorus starts, featuring subtle backing synth tones and the following lyrics, featuring the entire family’s supporting vocals:
“Incarcerated, blood-related, family lockdown boogie.”
The different cuts jump back and forth among different rooms. The choreography is uniquely synchronized, providing smooth, seamless transitions between cuts. Even Mom makes her way atop the kitchen counters.
Paying homage to classic hip-hop music videos, the family’s shown in the bathroom (and literally in the shower) sporting flat-brimmed hats, hoodies, and sunglasses. Their expressions are plain, if not serious.
The comical wordplay continues,
“What a treat it is to be locked down with these three because we can’t get on each other’s nerves if we’re dancing constantly.”
The family sits atop the steps leading to the second floor, proceeding to perform a series of stylized hand gestures.
The fun continues,
“We’re a nuclear family and we know how to rock.”
The footage continues to bounce between different locations within the Buchanan household. Their wardrobe changes a handful of times for added effect.
Next, the gang’s shown sporting bath robes, driving home themes of confinement and sanitation. The robes look pretty comfortable, not gonna lie.
After a flurry of clever verses from Jack, the family makes their way outdoors. A driveway view shows them atop the balcony in silhouette. The lighting adds some suspense to the production.
Fittingly, the gang’s last words read, “Family lockdown boogie.”
The music video proceeds to wrap up with a simple fade to black as the family returns indoors. Although the struggle of isolation and quarantining continues for much of the world, it’s important to stay productive and positive. The Buchanan family let out their isolation blues in song, what will you do?
