One of the best parts about Christmas is seeing the influx of greeting cards arrive in your mailbox showing happy families surrounded by festive holiday decor. This is one of the Odum family’s favorite things about Christmas.
The Frisco, Texas family wanted to make sure that husband and father David Odum didn’t miss out on their favorite part of Christmas and asked the internet to send them holiday greeting cards in August.
You see, David was diagnosed with terminal cancer so the family is celebrating Christmas early since David was only given a few months to live. So, people around the world are helping the family celebrate early.
“He’s my best friend, and I don’t want to let him go,” his wife, Becky Odum, said. “when we were talking about what he would like to do before he passes, he said he’d like to have one more holiday with his kids.”
So, Becky, who also lost her first husband to cancer, busted out the family’s Christmas decorations and asked people on Facebook to put up their Christmas wreath until they host David’s Christmas/birthday party on Sept. 6.
“We would love to invite you to join in the celebration with us by placing a Christmas wreath on your front door until after September 6th,” Becky wrote. “Every time you enter and exit, notice the oddly timed decor, and say a prayer/send a thought for David. This will be his 48th birthday, and I would love to collect at least 48 pictures of Christmas wreaths placed on the front door in his honor, to compile into a photo book for him.”
More than 200 people answered Becky’s post.
“It was let’s get upstairs, dig out the wreaths and we’ll put it on the door and take some pictures and join in on the posts,” said Steve Kair. “Heck. If I didn’t have a two-story house, I’d put the lights up.”
The response and some of the photos that have been sent are absolutely beautiful and heartwarming. They have come from as far as Australia.
“This has been absolutely fabulous because it’s brought everyone together in ways we could never have envisioned,” David told FOX 4 News. “If God graces us with Christmas in December, then we’ll have had two Christmases. We’re just not willing to take that risk.”
Becky says the family’s faith as well as the love that has been shown to them after her online post is helping them to get through this difficult time.
