Anyone who has spent any time watching late night television has probably seen The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
The talk show, currently broadcast by NBC, is well known for doing interesting interviews with various celebrities and public figures.
Over the years, a lot of talented people have appeared on the show, and the episode with Billy Joel was no exception.
One of the things that makes The Tonight Show great is that Jimmy Fallon not only interviews the guests he hosts, but normally also finds some really fun and creative ways to interact with them.
Thus it was no surprise that Jimmy pulled out all the stops to entertain the crowd when Billy Joel came by the set.
The interview started as you would expect, and Jimmy let him know how big of a fan he was of his music. It’s easy to understand why. Billy Joel really is one of the all-time greats, with multitudes of classic hits occurring all throughout his incredible career.
Soon however, the interview took a fun twist.
Jimmy let Billy Joel know that he would like to sing a duet with him and pulled out an iPad where he had installed a looper app.
What the app does, is after you click a few buttons, it loops your voice over and over again.
He got super excited and told Billy Joel that they were going to form a two-man Doo-Wop group, and that they were going to sing the famous tune, “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”.
Billy Joel asked him what key they would do it in, and Jimmy just looked confused. However, Billy Joel and the band figured it out.
The band starts playing, and Jimmy begins:
“A-weema-weh, a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh”
Next, it was Billy Joel’s turn, and he rattles off the same lyrics, this time in a different octave. The looper app does its job, and the song starts coming together.
As they continue on, the harmony is actually incredible, and even though Jimmy Fallon is no professional singer, Billy Joel picks up the slack.
While for the first verses they take turns singing, the third and final verse they both come together and the result is impressive.
“In the jungle, the mighty jungle the lion sleeps tonight. In the jungle the quiet jungle the lion sleeps tonight.”
Overall, it turned out to be a really cool rendition of the song, and something we never expected while watching the interview. Nice little surprises like this are why for so many years the dedicated fans of The Tonight Show have tuned in time and time again to watch.
By the end of the duet, the audience was even clapping along, and as Jimmy and Billy Joel finish, everyone erupts in total applause. Really, it is something you just have to see for yourself.
