Most of the time, the crying comes after, or at least during, the performances on America’s Got Talent. The beautiful emotion one brings to a song or the joy of victory is often what brings a tear to our eye when watching the live talent show.
However, that changed when Evie Clair was a contestant on the show.
The 13-year-old from Florence, Arizona had just about everyone in tears before she sang a single note. Clair explained to season 12 judges Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mel B and Howie Mandel last Tuesday how happy she was to be on the show and to be able to perform for them.
“It’s always been my dream,” she said. “Ever since I was little.”
She then explained that she would dedicate her audition performance of Christina Perri’s “Arms” to her father. Her dad was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in 2016, and even though he was given only a 5 percent chance to live he still continues to work at one of five prisons in her small town so he could support his family.
“Tonight, I’m here to sing for him,” she said.
Clair tearfully explained to judges that this was a song she would sing to her dad to cheer him up.
“When my dad is having rough days I go up to his room and I sing him this song to help him feel better and to give him comfort and strength to continue fighting,” she said.
And her performance did not disappoint. It was just as beautiful and emotionally compelling as you would imagine. So much so that it brought all four judges to their feet in a standing ovation when she was done.
Not only did the judges love it, but America did too.
“Absolutely amazing,” said one commentor on Clair’s Facebook page. “I can’t wait to see more of Evie!”
Clair’s performance really hit a nerve with fans who could relate to her struggle.
“You were amazing,” another commentor said. “That song made me tear up for a little bit. And I know what you are going through. That was the same way I lost my nana because she was the only person who had lived for a long time in her life. But, I never forget about her. You keep up with the song that you just sang, and I’m pretty sure you would win this year on America’s Got Talent.”
Clair performance, which you can watch below, has more than 3 million views. If that’s any indication of her success, then we just may see her as the winner of America’s Got Talent 2017.
