Remember that time when flash mobs were all the rage? From wedding proposals to pure mall entertainment, the group performances used to go viral and make the news all the time.

While they aren’t as popular as they were before, flash mobs can still be found staged in random public locations today.

One thing has stayed the same despite everything. Authorities in many areas are still wary about random flash mobs. However, these Florida cops are a different story entirely.

Dancing their hearts out

A group of dancers staged a flash mob during a busy time at the Aventura Mall in Miami, Florida.

Dressed in festive elf and Christmas-themed costumes, the dancers seemed to be bent on bring some holiday cheer to the crowd of people in the mall that day. They were succeeding, judging from the smiles on people’s faces as they passed by or stopped to record the dancers. More than a few were documenting the event on their phones.

The group has already been dancing for a couple of minutes when they were interrupted by two policemen who immediately began moving them away from their chosen dance spot.

Not what it seems

But they surprised the onlookers when they made their real intentions known. It seems like they were just shooing some dancers away to make room for the two of them on the dance floor.

That was entirely unexpected.

In a matter of seconds, the dancing was in full swing again, and the two police officers were busting out moves along with the original dancers.

As it turns out, it wasn’t actually that impromptu. The entire thing was planned, as revealed by a tweet posted by the Aventura Police Department.

Reactions

In the end, it wasn’t just the mall’s shoppers who were entertained by the flash mob.

People from all around the country and the globe who were able to watch the video of the dance on YouTube responded. they had plenty of positive things to say about the unanticipated event:

“You guys are awesome. I was away for Christmas and saw this show up on my recorded national news. I thought ” OH no, another bad cop story”. And then this. I almost cried. My hats off to your officers for this great display of humanity and fun. What a wonderful Christmas tribute.”

“I love this and retweeted. Thank you to all of our heroes and happy holidays to you and your families. Stay safe out there.”

And, of course, there always has to be one Grinch:

“I’ve seen 2 different versions of the routine. I don’t think anyone in that mall was surprised the 2nd time it was performed/filmed. Did someone not practice enough in order to do it correctly the first time?”

Even if they did have to practice the routine more than once, we’re not complaining. It was the perfect surprise for those who got to see it in person and a great reminder for everyone that even police have a fun side.
