Down Syndrome might cause physical issues and intellectual disabilities but it doesn’t mean that children diagnosed with the condition can’t live a good life. In fact, most of them have a variety of athletic abilities as well as levels of agility that enable them to blend well with other kids. One good example is Jojo Gonzales

Jojo was born with Down Syndrome in 1998.

At first, the family was shocked by his diagnosis but they were able to power through everything with the help of Jojo’s incredible spirit. For his family, he is like the sun in any room he’s in. He brings out the best in people and he’s able to melt away anyone’s stress and negative feelings.

Like most kids, Jojo likes to play basketball.

It’s his favorite thing to do. In fact, he plays on the school team. At times, he even calls himself LeBron, after LeBron James who’s considered as one of the best basketball players today.

Playing basketball enables Jojo to interact with other kids. Knowing how important it is for his development, the family wanted a safe space where he can independently thrive and do what he loves the most.

The family’s backyard is an ideal space for Jojo’s activities.

However, it requires a major transformation that they couldn’t handle alone. The project requires a lot of money and a lot of work.

Then, help came.

George to the Rescue, a home renovation series hosted by George Oliphant, offered to help and the family was ecstatic about it.

“If he were to come here and transform our backyard, it would be life-changing.”- Laura, Jojo’s mother, said.

The backyard had tons of issues. With the old drainage system and water on the foundation, George and his team had to do a lot of work to transform the area into a finished backyard where Jojo and his family can hang out safely.

The project was completed in a short amount of time. Despite that, the result is nothing short of magical.

The team was able to build a kitchen in the backyard. Jojo even gets to have his very own basketball court.

With just one look at the finished project, Jojo started to cry.

“When we walked into the yard, I was just overcome with emotion. Joseph was really happy.” -Laura said.

Just when the family thought the surprise was over, George revealed a special area his team made for them. It was an outdoor fire table that can actually play music. In an instant, it put Jojo in a dancing mood and everyone was pretty happy about it.

It has been an emotional day for the entire family as well as their family and friends. And even though they didn’t think they’d be crying that day, their hearts feel totally filled.

People with Down Syndrome, particularly the kids, can live a very normal life. As long as they have their family’s support and they value their best interests, they can do whatever they want.

For Jojo’s family, the experience was truly life-changing.

Now, they wouldn’t have to worry about limiting Jojo’s activity. He can play whenever he wants in the family’s backyard. They have a safe place to get together, too.
