After nearly three decades of sobriety, Sir Elton John is celebrating his accomplishment with a message to fans โ€“ and all those whoโ€™ve stood by his side.

Weโ€™ve seen many celebrities take a darkened path (many of which never came out the other side). But as for the legendary singer, heโ€™s โ€œa survivor.โ€

Elton Johnโ€™s rise to fame was recently documented in the biopic Rocketman. For years, the musician abused substances as a way to cope with his struggles โ€“ even facing a shopping addiction, eating disorder, and issues with anger.

Eventually, however, he reached a breaking point.

In an exclusive interview with Variety, John said:

โ€œThe life I was leading, flying on the Starship [his legendary private plane], living in beautiful houses, buying things left, right and center โ€” it was not a normal life, not the sort of life I came from anyway. I lost complete touch with that. I vowed when I did change my life that that would never happen again.โ€

One person who helped inspire Johnโ€™s sobriety was teen (and friend) Ryan White, who passed away from AIDS. According to PEOPLE, the musician checked into Chicagoโ€™s Parkside Lutheran Hospital in 1990 โ€“ the year of Ryanโ€™s passing.

โ€œThank you to all the selfless people who have helped me on my journey through sobriety. I am eternally grateful. Elton xoโ€
