It’s one thing to see the amazing pictures by an artist but it’s something else entirely when that artist is only 16. Dusan Krtolica is a Serbian artist who is still just a teenager. But producing amazing drawings is not anything new. He’s been an amazing artist since he could hold a pencil. When Dusan was 2 years old, he found an interest in art. Ever since then, he’s been drawing attention (pun intended) throughout the world.
Now, at age 16, Dusan is already making a name for himself as an artist. He has six art shows and appeared on television many times. He also published a book at age 13, which depicted prehistoric life with a special focus on animals.
Dusan’s favorite subject? Animals and nature, which he says are absolutely fascinating to him. His depictions of them are fascinating to buyers across the planet, people eager to hang Dusan’s pictures on their walls.
But for this talented 16-year-old, these awesome drawings are not about money. They’re about following his passion for art and nature while meeting people from other countries. Many of his customers have become his friends, Dusan says. And it’s no wonder they’re attracted to his amazing skill!
Dusan’s work here is done in pen, which makes the detailed rendering of these insects even more amazing. These butterflies, grasshoppers, caterpillars, beetles, bees, and more put the artist’s wonderful eye for detail on display. He has also sneaked in a few non-insects, including a crab and a lizard, which you may have to look closely to find.
2. A stately owl watching its artist
If you want to be impressed, take a look at the date in the corner: 2012. That’s when Dusan was only 9 years old. Most adults don’t have the artistic skill that Dusan had when he was in the third grade. That is some serious talent!
3. A pelican looking down over the water
Dusan says one of the things he loves the most about animals is their amazing ability to adapt to different environments. They certainly supply him with no end of diverse and varied subject matter. In this one, a pelican stands tall and proud.
4. A mother ape cuddles her baby
This sweet picture captures the unique bond between a mother and her baby in the animal kingdom. It’s interesting to see Dusan’s skills develop. Back in 2013, he hadn’t yet mastered his hands — or at least not ape hands.
5. A tropical rainforest scene
This amazingly intricate rainforest scene definitely captures Dusan’s love of animals and different habitats. The picture contains endless points of focus. You could stare at it for hours and still discover new elements.
6. A flock of birds
This flock of birds isn’t usually found together, especially not grouped around a bird of prey like the owl. They are drawn in amazing detail. You can tell that he paid attention to each stroke of the pen.
7. A school of fascinating fish
This is another of Dusan’s drawings that seem to have endless details. It could capture your attention for hours on end as you follow the various elements that each of the hundreds of fish depicts. And yes, it looks like these fish are real.
8. An ocean reef full of life
The awesome thing about art is that artists can recreate the very thing that inspires and moves them. This picture is a perfect example of how Dusan manages to share his love of animals and their complex and varied habitats.
9. A glimpse at the process
In fact, Dusan’s drawings are so intricate, he often needs to work with a magnifying glass. It takes amazing talent to recreate something so small and delicate.
10. A step into a fantasy world
He might love all kinds of real animals but that doesn’t mean all of Dusan’s drawings are completely true to life. For this drawing, he played with a rendition of a dragon. It must have been hard, considering he didn’t have a real-life model.
11. Another depiction of the rainforest
It seems as though the rainforest is a popular theme for Dusan’s drawings, and it’s no wonder considering there are few places with such a rich diversity of plant and animal life. This is what makes artistic renderings so perfect, especially ones as detailed as these.
12. The other side of the world
If there was any biome that could be called the total opposite of a rainforest, it’s the desert. But Dusan has perfectly captured this scene in the same mesmerizing detail that he puts into all of his work. Just look at all the desert animal life he rendered.
13. Finding the beauty in the bugs
You might not think that spiders would make a good art subject but you would be wrong. This beautiful drawing captured the creepy crawlies up close. As long as they’re in pen and ink, you can admire them without fear.
14. A gazelle faces off to a tree
It’s fascinating to see little Dusan holding up his artwork. The contrast between his young face and the enormous talent of his drawings is unbelievable. There’s no doubt this kid is going a long way.
15. Another version of Mama and Baby Ape
It’s also fascinating to see the ways that Dusan’s art skills have improved over the years. Though there’s no doubt that he was always enormously talented, his abilities have improved tremendously.
16. A love for animals – wild and domestic
This wolf might be wild but he definitely looks like he has a domestic side to him. He has a pathetic look on his face that reminds you his descendants are the very pups you love to cuddle.
17. More than just animal subjects
Dusan’s favorite subject might be animals but that doesn’t mean they’re his only passion. Here, he shows off a picture of a medieval knight and his horse. Of course, the horse is drawn in perfect detail.
18. A grumpy rhinoceros shows off his decoration
It’s obvious that Dusan draws inspiration from places and subjects as varied as the environments he loves to recreate. In this picture, a grouchy-looking rhinoceros looks less than thrilled to be dressed head to toe in decorative armor.
19. A bird of prey shows off its impressive beak
These days, Dusan is still working and creating, with fans all over the world. In a Facebook album entitled “2017,” he showed off the creative process for this, particularly fierce subject.
20. Another fierce animal caught in a not-so-fierce moment
Dusan is also very good at playing with contrasts. In this drawing from 2013, he shows off the contrasting effect of a frightening wild tiger gently cradling her cub in her mouth. If that doesn’t make you say “aww,” we don’t know what will.
21. A slightly more domesticated wolf
It’s not all wild animals that Dusan renders in his drawings. In this one, he’s drawn a much more familiar face. He’s managed to capture that buggy-eyed look that some little dogs have.
22. One mesmerizing detail
Sometimes, it’s the fine details that make for the best picture, as Dusan aptly shows in this close-up of a horse’s eye. He’s a master of shading and capturing details that most of us probably would never have noticed.
23. Another flight into fantasy
In this drawing, simply entitled “Pegasus,” Dusan strays again into a fantasy world. It just goes to show that he’s a master of all kinds of images, including those taken from life and those from his own imagination.
24. And a blast from the far past
Dusan also used his Facebook page to show off the progress of his encyclopedia of pre-history. The book was published in Serbia and is now about to be re-released in English-speaking countries. No doubt Dusan’s global fans will be excited.
25. You can see each individual pen stroke
When you look at this amazing iguana, it’s not hard to believe that Dusan uses a magnifying glass while he draws. Just look at the detail on everything from the scales to the eyes. There’s no doubt it’s a labor of love.
