If “Swingtacular” isn’t a word in your vocabulary, you’re missing out on a good time – and some talented dancing!
Swing dance has become increasingly popular all over the country, and it’s no wonder why.
This style of dance isn’t just fun – it also tends to be accepting of all skill levels and body sizes, unlike some other forms of dance.
This inclusive nature draws a diverse crowd into lessons and amateur competitions, making it a beloved activity for many.
One standout event in the swing dance community is the annual Swingtacular by Dance Geek Productions.
This event offers dancers the chance to learn new skills, meet fellow enthusiasts, and share their creativity and expertise.
The excitement and camaraderie at Swingtacular are clear, creating an unforgettable experience for participants and spectators alike.
It’s an event that celebrates the joy of dancing and the community that forms around it.
A particularly impressive video was posted to YouTube following the West Coast Swing “Swingtacular” Invitational.
Like all competitions, Swingtacular features both pre-choreographed dances and a “Jack and Jill”-style competition.
The Jack and Jill format is especially challenging and entertaining.
Dancers are paired at random, with no pre-planned choreography, and must find a way to dance well together to two randomly chosen songs.
According to the U.S. Open Swing organization, “The Jack & Jill competition highlights social dance skills with an emphasis on lead and follow, technique, timing, and teamwork.”
This requires trust, grace, skill, and some serious improvisational ability.
Nick King and Victoria Henk were chosen to pair up for this competition.
As the emcee explained the format, the two dancers stretched out on the floor, ready to impress the audience.
Just to shake things up, the music started while they were still on the floor, catching Nick King by surprise.
Despite this unexpected twist, they won over the audience from the beginning.
King lifted Henk off the floor with style, and she struck a few poses, impressing everyone with their smooth moves and seamless improvisation.
Their peers cheered them on excitedly as they performed.
The first song they danced to was “Valleys” by the band Honors.
While acrobatic moves are not allowed in this competition, there is still room for flair, and Nick and Victoria had it in spades.
Their slick performance didn’t even look like they were breaking a sweat.
The music choice was modern, which was unexpected for a swing dance competition, but they proved that you can swing dance to just about anything with enough talent.
Throughout their performance, Nick and Victoria never strayed more than an arm’s length apart, adhering to swing dance rules while executing spins, dips, twirls, and twists.
When the slow dance ended, they seemed excited for their fast song, “1, 2, Step” by Ciara.
The pair looked ready to bring the heat, and their enthusiasm was contagious.
What made their performance even more captivating was how much fun they appeared to be having.
Their enjoyment was evident in every move, and they even pulled off a maneuver that elicited enthusiastic reactions from their fellow dancers.
The fast song triggered more flawless twirling, dipping, and hip-swaying, showcasing their dynamic partnership.
Nick and Victoria ended up coming in second in the fan favorite category, which came as no surprise.
Their unexpectedly edgy and sexy moves changed many minds about the genre, showing just how versatile and exciting swing dance can be.
And it wasn’t just the voters at the competition who loved their performance.
One commenter summed it up perfectly:
“The girl is wonderful and the man glides across the floor as smooth as you’d ever want to see. Beautiful!”
We couldn’t agree more.
