Michael Jackson wasn’t called the King of Pop for nothing. Over his career, he has released several top-selling albums and has become one of the most significant figures of the 20th century. So reimagining any of his music is an intimidating prospect. But these two dancers nail it at Urban Dance Camp.
Who’s bad? Not these two
The video opens with a small title card introducing us to Urban Dance Camp. It’s an intensive dance training experience coordinated and managed by some of the best choreographers around. As you can guess from the title, it has a world focus that intends on bringing peoples together in spite of their backgrounds. It’s considered by some to be, one of the world’s most prestigious educational experiences.
The video then cuts to our two main stars. As the music begins, the pair start dancing to the beat of Michael Jackson’s “Dangerous”. It might be hard to imagine how they can come close to matching the original music, but these pair look ready to try.
The pair start strong, with motions and gestures that feel intimate and close. It fits the lyrics of the song to a T. The dancer in white is the one reaching out but you can tell that the dancer in gray is the one in control during the entire time.
At about the 0:50 mark, one of the strongest sequences plays out. As the sounds of a gun cock plays followed by a jet stream, the pair move through their motions in perfect unison. You can tell that this was the hallmark of the performance and parts of the crowd lose it.
But the crowd approval never breaks their stride as the couple keeps up the powerful motions and steps. There’s a lot of style to be seen especially when the dancer in white falls to his side leaving his partner to keep up the dance. The motions are even matched with the lyrics declaring:
The girl was dangerous
You might wonder if his partner can carry the performance while he’s on the floor. But they take the ball and run with it. Some of the best steps come during this segment and it’s a joy to watch.
Eventually, the other dancer rises to his feet and rejoins the dance. It’s clear that something has changed in this visual story, but it’s left to the viewers to watch and discover what’s different between the two.
The song reaches it’s final peak. Both dancers roll to the floor coming to a crash just as the song ends.
A standing ovation
After the song’s last note, the crowd erupts with applause. Both of our dancers can only smile and humbly thank the crowd while they’re being cheered on.
From end to end, there isn’t a silent seat in the house as the whole room is abuzz with energy. These two dancers have clearly won the crowd over. Judging by the comments on the video, there was a lot of approval from YouTube viewers as well. It’s not hard to see why the video has won over 169k likes since it’s publishing and we are excited to see more.
Would you take part in Urban Dance Camp? Do you think they nailed this rendition of “Dangerous”?
